I’m down for a ‘57 SP&S. Two lumber yards on the planned layout so I’ve got a need for PacNW cars like these.

For a few years I've been admiring Moloco products but they've been too new for me so considered myself "safe" for better or worse. That ended today. I had heard he was considering earlier dates- NICE. I'm in for one GN as built and look forward to future releases.
THANK YOU MOLOCO!

Looks like another good one for eastern modelers intent on capturing the lumber trade. The EL wheel reports have plenty of examples of GN and SP&S cars, mainly hauling lumber, but a few other commodities as well.

Took me a second to realize these were not the same BN cars announced back in January (NP Brainerd-built with centered double doors)!
Not shown above is an undecorated kit for a combination plug/sliding version that may hint at some future run possibilities.

As a matter of interest, do the different floor types show on the outside of the car?

Any indication on how late the SP&S were running? I believe I saw SP&S ones on Fallen Flags up to ‘78 (by that point BN). They lasted until at least the 1/84 ORER (9 cars). There were still 28 in the 1/83 and 39 in the 1/82 ORERs.

Sorry.
Yes, there are some BN cars in the reports. None in the 201xxx group, but four in the 245xxx group. Of those four, three were empties westbound, and the lone eastbound was hauling stone/glass to Seiberling Tire & Rubber in Barberton, OH.
What is interesting is that I've got more SP&S cars (7) than GN cars (5) of this type, which surprised me.

Mark, There a 13 cars on the wheel reports, in the 245000 series, specifically, 245519 is an exact match, but others on either side are possibilities with this CRP 1973 date. Yes, Pat. And the SP&S typically retained their delivery schemes well into the 80s. I count 13 cars in the 245000 series. Nick No BN cars on the reports? Mark Mark... Sorry.

The drawing of the boxcar in the 1970 BN repaint still shows the runningboard present (even though the pre-BN GN Big Sky Blue has it removed), while it's removed in the drawing of the 1973 repaint.

Not physically, unless you look underneath. But you do see it in the difference in the CU FT stencil. 4953 versus 4955. Nick As a matter of interest, do the different floor types show on the outside of the car?

Correct, the 1970 repaints were just that, so roofwalks remained on in 1970, just repainted no rebuilding or re-furbishing. BN was still pretty young at that point. The first Capital Rebuild Program for these cars started in 1973. Nick The drawing of the boxcar in the 1970 BN repaint still shows the runningboard present, while it's removed in the drawing of the 1973 repaint.

Aha!
You actually know what you are talking about. I just look up number series in the ORER. I see other cars with similar dimensions in the Register, but have no idea if they are identical cars or not, so in my ignorance I tend to err on the side of caution. Thanks for the information!

I preordered two of them, expecting they'll be $55-$60-ish when they show up. Decided to go with ones with the roofwalk removed, although an as-built red is tempting.

This may be kind of silly, but I think I may have to order one of the red Great Northern cars because it reminds me of a similar Atlas N scale offset door car that I had in that scheme when I was a kid. It was one of the first freight cars I remember having (I started off in N scale). Seeing the announcement immediately reminded me of that old model.

This may be kind of silly,... Nope. Ain't. I got me a nice Ulrich triple hopper in B&O, waiting to build someday. I bought my first one when I started high school, and always liked it. THIS time, I'm not going to brush paint it to make it better. Ed
