I'm starting this thread to go along with my build of a Walthers Sunrise Feed Mill- or rather two of them as one structure. The prototype I'm following is located in Big Spring, MD along the old WM. Unfortunately, the below is probably the best picture I can link. The building still exists, but it's been modified and covered in vinyl siding, so I'm afraid a research trip over there wouldn't give me much I don't already know. In the picture you can also see the prototype train order office which I completed earlier this year. The first thing I'm doing is extending the height of the main structure by about half a story. A little bit of slice and dice is needed to match the window and door arrangement of the real thing. One side is reassembled and puttied so far.

I must say, of all the layouts "on the come" yours is quietly piquing my interest more and more. As it stands, I don't know of anyone else currently amassing prototypical buildings for an era specific layout. Excited to see this come to fruition.

I'm having a lot of fun building the collection. While I'm going to be less of a slave to accuracy for most non-railroad structures, there are some that are just distinctive or prominent enough to make the effort.

Today I cleaned up the first wall and put together the other side wall for the main part of the structure. Though it's the track side, the only view of it I have is the picture above- all other pictures I've seen in this spot have pesky F-units covering the elevator! I think the window and door arrangement makes sense and lines up reasonably with the photo. Besides, the layout isn't planned yet, so I'm not sure which side it'll be viewed from. I think having the track behind the building makes for a more interesting viewing angle of this scene. Oh, and the end walls are done too, but they're nothing worth looking at. Only the tops will show so I wasted no effort making the height extensions pretty. My goal is to get the windows in and the main "box" assembled tomorrow after work. Most of my modeling time for today went towards the shed for the other (Charlton) elevator:

Okay, got everything I had hoped to done, and also built the funky little wall that borders the truck loading area. I noticed there were basement windows and cut those in, but didn't bother on the track side--maybe I'll board them up. Don't have any appropriate windows on hand, so I'll probably just print some to fit. At this point I think all the major surgery is done, just need to cut the remainder of the walls to size/shape.

Did you use parts from the kit or styrene to raise the height? I have the same kit and am wanting to kitbash it a bit some I’m curious.

In hindsight I should have planned my cuts a little better, as I have plenty of material but it's going to take more splicing than it could have to make the walls I need.

Going from the Walther’s stock photoI’m planning on cutting the left part of the building off and making it a separate building and maybe loose the “steeple” but I’ve yet to open my kit to see how it’d work.

You'll need to fabricate new end walls for both structures, as the tall wall is hollow below the roof of the left section. The roof has locating ribs and a depression for the cupola so you'll have to do a little bit of rework there to remove it. That said, I'm going to make my own metal roof for mine, so I have two kits worth of roof I don't need...

Further progress: This L-shaped addition is built from Evergreen clapboard siding, since it was apparently added much later than the rest of the structure. It's getting pretty sizeable now, measuring nearly 14 inches with one more portion still to be added at the far end.

Let's just say next time I'll photocopy the parts before I start and plan my cuts with those. These last couple walls were rough... The one door is hanging down past the wall because it extends into the foundation, yet to be added. The ground slopes down at this end of the building so the foundation is much deeper.

Bump.
So how is this project going? I am interested to see where it is going, or if it is like some (many) of my projects, not going?

Funny you bring this up, I just pulled it out a yesterday to jump back in! Must have been a disturbance in the force. It's been a while since I've done any structure work (this, most recently), but I have the itch again. If I remember right, my next step to finish the walls was that I need a base to assemble the structure on since it won't sit flat once I attach the far right hand segment. There's a ramp down to the loading door in the basement on that end. The covered truck loading area would also be difficult to handle without a base, since to my knowledge there isn't a concrete pad under it. I had thought to make the base from foam, but in the meantime my father-in-law bought a fairly large filament printer, so I might give him that portion of the project, just for fun. Fortuitously, I have since found a photo of the building from the far end, which I had previously never seen in its earlier configuration. What I built was correct, but I learned that there should also be a sign painted over there. I couldn't find any windows I liked for the basement, so those are printed. No basement windows on the track side. I'd been painting as I go, brushing a thin aged white color over the gray primer. That's essentially my initial approach to weathering, so that it looks like it was painted at different times, because it was! I'll see if I can link the other end photo from FB later today, I know it will be more interesting to you all if I can actually show what I'm recreating!

Nice job! It is amazing how a bit of work rearranging things can change an ordinary Walthers kit from an easily identifiable / everyone has one structure, into something unique. I may have gotten enough motivation to plan out what to do with my Sunrise kit. It looks like parts from a second kit open up even more possibilities.
