Athearn got the PDF pages of their latest new product announcements up nice and early this morning. Probably eagerness to do so caused two mistakes in spelling Pennsylvania in the one for the Genesis series GP7s.
The firm is certainly correct that at least some of the Bangor & Aroostook GP7's and GP9's did a lot of work for other railroads. I remember seeing dark blue BAR units in Framingham, Massachusetts where a former New Haven line from the Shore Line that branched to connect with the B&M in two places crossed the ex-NYC, ex-B&A main line from Boston to Albany and Selkirk yard. Note that there's a separate listing of photos of Bicentennial diesels in the "B" section of the great rr-fallenflags.org website; the BAR's 1776 was one of the most attractive, in my opinion.
A question for someone more conversant with boxcar models than I am: do the FMC 5283 boxcar models now in the Roundhouse series have proper dimensions, or are they one of the types with the wrong width?
More questions, which at some point I'll send to Athearn myself: What are the three body types for the HO Airslides shown, or are there only two? Will the models of the PRR GP7's actually be black or Dark Green Locomotive Enamel? And what color is the lettering: gold, imitation gold or just yellow?

The URL for the new announcements generally is: www.athearn.com/Articles/Hobbywire.aspxWow! PRR GP7s with steam generators for passenger service Williamsport to Buffalo. Never saw those in action. Those trains were likely off before I got as far as the Pennsy line through East Aurora and Elma, NY on my bicycle 1965 or so. I only saw the glorious Tuscan Red E-units on passenger trains.

The single bay airslides look nice; other than that, not much in recent Athearn announcements have a target on me. Hopefully they'll get around to more Genesis ICC cabooses soon.

More GP38-2s are always welcomed. Now how about a Genesis GP38 or 40? Those 2600 airslide hoppers are really nice. I got one from the previous run and it is a work of art. Did Athearn ever offer this car in the late Pennsy paint scheme? I’ve got a two sets of Dan Kohlberg PRR decals for the 2600 airslide and have been searching in vain for an undecorated kit for them. If anyone has a kit that they want to sell please PM me. Thanks, Mark

A question for someone more conversant with boxcar models than I am: do the FMC 5283 boxcar models now in the Roundhouse series have proper dimensions, or are they one of the types with the wrong width? Does that really matter?: However, I do believe it is the correct width. It appears Athearn has two FMC 5283's, one being the former, and too wide, MDC car; and the other being an Athearn-designed car based on their old Railbox, with new sides. If'n you want a 5283, I'd recommend Intermountain's. Unless you yearn for working sliding doors. Ed

Those Airslides with minimal lettering will be great to do a few cars with Dan Kohlberg decals (Liberty Milling, Germantown MD). They're hard to find on eBay. About a year ago, I won a NKP Airslide that I figured would be simple enough to remove the lettering and re-decal the car. When I got the car, it appeared that it had been assembled poorly at the factory, and the bottom pieces had more or less been "forced" into fitting with the shell. Nothing fit properly, and was warped from making it "work" so the car is basically useless except as a parts source for a roofwalk, brake equipment, etc. You couldn't tell from the photos, and you wouldn't be able to tell in person unless you flipped the car over and started working on it. The car appeared to be mint in box, so I don't think the seller even had any idea. Oh well, on the shelf of purgatory it went.
So yeah, I'm in for two 2-packs. Low cube containers in OCL and YM Line? Ohhhh boy yes!! I was thinking about suggesting some of those roads to Scale Trains for use on their low cube 40' containers. Definitely needed. Athearn has previously made some 70s and 80s container schemes on their hi cube containers that would not be right for the 70s and early 80s. I have some of those as stand-ins but could use low cube 40's in EMC (Evergreen), CTI and Gelco... please?

I really like the idea of that SCL airslide, but at least the reporting marks need some love. Seems like many of their products these days they just picked something that kinda looks right and called it a day.

...but could use low cube 40's in EMC (Evergreen)... I recommend picking up some of the Atlas versions. I'm happy with mine. They apparently have all the end-corrugations done right. Intermountain has done Evergreen, also; but they got the lettering off-center. I will concede that the container they copied might have had the lettering off-center, too. Maybe. I'm a big fan of Evergreen boxes because they haven't changed in decades (as far as I can tell). They never stuck their web address up on the corner, which then dates the boxes. Ed

On that same token, if Athearn is using the same number font for the GTW GP38-2's as they did for the GP40-2, it needs similar attention.

I have some of those as stand-ins but could use low cube 40's in EMC (Evergreen), CTI and Gelco... please? Warning: container fanatic ramblings below! The YM Line (older scheme) is a very nice surprise; never been made in HO before despite being pretty common on several railroads from the 80s thru the mid 90s (roughly!) The KKFU/K-Line ones are really neat in themselves, could be used from the 90s to now roughly. Pretty much any container without a website link is good for the 80s-90s-2000s. Nedlloyd is good for the 80s(?) thru 2000s, even though P&O-Nedlloyd happened in 1997, there were plenty of stragglers. The Hanjin one looks to be a 2000s-2010s era container judging by the website, an odd choice kind of. Could be convincing for earlier eras if the website link was scrubbed off. The Beacon container (leased to Yang Ming.. wow, three YM cans in one run!) could reasonably fit into a 2000s to now era, but I'm no container expert. I'm more of a "container generalist" (i know general knowledge but i don't know everything!), but I assume that the container lines started leasing from Beacon, Triton, Textainer etc in the 2000s, could be earlier, don't take my word for any of this lol. The OCL is the most exciting one of the bunch because I've never seen any of them in HO before. The only other model I can think of that's in this scheme is the C-Rail (OO Scale) model, but they're too big to fit in an HO scale consist. I've been looking at Jacksonville Terminal Company's offerings for the N scale container market, and have been wishing that someone make at least some of the paintschemes they've done in HO. I'm glad that Athearn is trying to fill the gap instead of doing another run of the same 10 container companies, because there's far more than 10 in total, especially in the 1990s where you'd see far more variety. Sorry for my rambling, I hope I'm not wrong (if I am, no big deal) but I'm just hoping that someone makes Tiphook, Cronos, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (with the big banner reading the company's name), Transamerica Leasing (yes, they owned 20' and 40's!), Atlantic Container Line... oh I'll stop begging, maybe someone should take notes from Jacksonville Terminal company and make what they're making in HO instead of N.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to yatter too much about containers.
For Textainer, anyway, it goes back beyond 1995, as that's when I inherited "ownership" of a couple. I've always linked Triton with Textainer on the timeline. Beacon SEEMS to be later, though..........
Wikipedia says Textainer started in 1979.
Transamerica's been done in 40' without the "pointy building" (it's what we locals call it) by ScaleTrains. Intermountain is taking reservations for 20's WITH the pointy building.
Hanjin and Hyundai containers have been produced both with and without the website. Take yer pick. One thing I like about the Hyundai is that, in my area of interest, there were a LOT of 45's mixed into the pile. As opposed to Evergreen, where they're still rare.

I'll probably go for a Pennsy GP7 as I have 3 GP9s and a GP9B in Pennsy, like the airslides too. Would like to see PC GP38-2s as I only have one in PC they ran these before I switched to HO and found one on ebay the Detroit Edison yellow birds would be nice too as I model the Pennsy Cleveland Pittsburgh line in early Conrail, as well as early PC. We still need GP40s I have Atlas units but wouldn't mind seeing a genesis one.

I am happy to have a container discussion, especially on the older liveries. I too, have never seen any HO scale OCL containers before. I do recall a 20' version in OO gauge available in Europe(?). When I was a kid, I had a Matchbox-equivalent sized tractor trailer with two OCL 20' reefer cans on a flatbed. Very crude, not good for HO scale, and not likely a prototype but for YEARS I've been wondering why we couldn't get HO scale OCL cans. Same for the YM Lines stuff...they seem to have been fairly common. Good point about ACL cans being needed as well, I don't think there has ever been one one except for the AHM/Life Like 20' container. I'm glad there is a good list of modern container equipment available these days; modern intermodal modelers are quite common in my friend group, and they are an interesting aspect of current railroad operations. But we still have some holes to fill when it comes to 60s, 70s, and 80s intermodal. Again, I lobby for standard height cans in EMC, Gelco, CTI, and whatever others are needed. And to that end, try finding 40' and 20' container chassis to run them with. I have a small stash of Athearn 20' chassis kits I have been building over the years. I bought them all in either UNDEC or FlexiVan. I've been fudging a lot of the paint and decal work because the only thing harder than buying the models is finding prototype pics of the chassis from that era. The also don't exactly match the style of chassis that had a sliding set of wheels, which resulted in them riding at a steep, pitched angle on flat cars. I just started completely fudging the Athearn kits by shimming the end of the chassis with the wheel assembly so that it rides at that pitched angle, but don't look too close. I've been able to purchase two 3-packs of the American Models Limited 40' chassis. They are flat, unpainted kits that go together pretty quickly. A rattle-can paint job and some "close enough" looking decal work and that pretty much completes my 40' chassis fleet. Included below is an older picture of an BLMA F89J with 2 40' container/chassis combos. The Sea Land job is an Intermountain container with cut-down Athearn 45' chassis I was able to find for cheap. Repainted and given a quick and dirty decal job. The EMC container is an Athearn 40' can releases as a blue box kit in the 90s. I'd like to replace this container with a standard height can once one becomes available in this paint scheme. The chassis is from American Models Limited, and even those are becoming hard to find now. It was built up from their flat kit, painted, and decaled into Evergreen. I'm sure it's not accurate for my era, but I do like how it looks. TTX 601003 by Freight Engineer, on Flickr

Those models were also foobies as far as I can tell, as I have not been able to find prototype picturs of any Hanjin 40' containers with the logo panels or in green paint. I am also disregarding the Con-Cor or other toy like products that may be out there. Would really like some additional Hanjin containers for my mid 90's era SP stack train and have never been able to find any.

I could make a list of various container lines we need in HO. It would take a while, and could do with a seperate thread, but it'd be fun at least to me! I might start on that tomorrow. Also yes, early Evergreen as well as CTI/Gelco are needed. I have a Gelco 20 footer, unsure if it'd show up in my era but I can make an exception.

The original Athearn blue box twin pack of Hanjin 40' containers - one green and one blue - did not have the website. ScaleTrains released Hanjin blue containers in their first run without the website as well.
I had that Yatming semi-tractor trailer with the container chassis and two 20' reefer containers. Mine were lettered for OOCL. Those trucks seemed to be slightly undersized for HO scale, but at the time it was hard to be choosy. I've seen some really respectable models made from those old die-cast Yatming trucks. The Tyco Kenworth K100 and Athearn Freightliner COE were much easier to work with, though.

I'd love to see that! One thing I enjoy about modeling intermodal is the ability to create more than one train by collecting different loads. You can have two or three sets of containers for a given set of well cars to model different trains. I've got so many Maersk, Evergreen and APL containers that I can almost fill out my well cars three times to make up some of the Santa Fe, SP and UP trains I grew up with. You can do the same thing with trailers, too. I have so many of them I can fill up my flatcars at least twice. And yet there are more I want to build...

Nice to see some CSX ex CR 38-2’s being done. I see they’re using the 2759 again (was done in RTR years ago) and it would be nice to see the yn2 ex CR GP’s again one day, whether it be Genesis or Roundhouse. That was definitely their best scheme. Time to start saving up again!

Amen to the main points of Ryan H's most recent posting as fr8kar!
I was amused to follow a link in another post and learn from the Japanese artist who designed the old Mitsui OSK Lines logo that the container-hefting reptile he designed was indeed supposed to be an alligator. Since that. kind of beast is strictly a "New World" creature, while crocodiles also live in Asia, I had wrongly assumed that it was probably a croc! I believe the word alligator derives from the Spanish el logardo (the lizard).
Correction: Wikipedia says that there is also a Chinese alligator that may have inspired the mythical Chinese dragon! I hadn't heard of it before, and I'm 75 years old!
