Model desk follies............ A milled GP30 chassis with some styrene bits added just prior to painting. Here everything except the short hood is glossed up. Some SD7 bits, i started out with the idea of simply re-motoring the Life Like chassis with a Kato set up, that went well, it runs great and I just have to add a simple LED light set up to it. The more I looked at the 25 year old paint work on the body, the less happy I got.... So into the 91 proof alcohol it went, here it's close to having all it's decals done, I'd forgotten with a PITA the nose stripes can be!

Here is a prototype photo of an older reefer repainted in Sunkist colors. The car sits in the yard of old rolling stock in Fillmore, CA Here is a model of the car, done with Microscale decals that sits in front of The Union Ice Company facility in the town of Santa Paula on my layout. It does not precisely match the prototype because I used an undecorated Accurail model that I had on hand. If I were to do it over, I would have used a different undecorated model to start with. Live and learn.

Some planomania today
I have been busy upgrading mine Atlas Trainman hoppers and four custom painted Atlas Bluebox boxcars with new running boards and brake platforms from Plano.
The red hopper has the running board and the side supports attached. The yellow hopper is being prepared.
The front boxcar was the first to be converted hence the fully painted running board. The brake platform for this car is on the to-do list. The boxcar behind has the holes plugged. The plugs have to be shaped before the runningboard can be glued in place.

TBird, what motherboard are you using on the SD7. Nice work on both models BTW.

Great car bobby, I have always admired your work and like a fine wine or whatever you like, it gets even better over time.

You're embeding wrong... assuming a desktop computer, click the Share arrow in Flickr, and then the "BBCode" tab, and then copy that snippet and paste it here.

Small update a group shot of the four Atlas Trainman hoppers with their new running boards and break platforms. Planomania - 2 by G.Damen, on Flickr
I know that there are lot of other options to enhance these models. But they wil live their lives at modulair meetings where a lot of people wil handel them, so this is good enough. Perhaps some airhoses will be added and for sure the couplers need to be weathered a bit better. Just learned how to do it

Mr. Monday back with a few items in progress. I am still also chipping in on the SCL gon project, just doing some filling and sanding on the ends before I drill for stanchions. The SSAM car in natural light. Haven't much to show on progress since last week. One of my three bulkheads from SXT's first run. Deck is done, sides are mostly done, now it's the ends and a little more work on the trucks.

Hey csxt8400, can you share how you toned down that Scale Trains flat to be less lemon-flavored and a bit more subdued? Looks real nice.

Hey csxt8400, can you share how you toned down that Scale Trains flat to be less lemon-flavored and a bit more subdued? Looks real nice. Hey man, I appreciate that. I don't know if it's the fact that I know what mediums I used so to me it just looks like a car with said application, but it's nice to know that others find it presentable. I started the job with Ammo tracks enamel wash, which I let set for a few days, and then I followed it up with a newer technique for me, and just layered pan pastels over the car. I used two shades to get the rich-golden tint, one more of a burnt umber and the other a lighter rust color. The side I showed came out pretty good, the other side is being reworked as I didn't like the tone variations I got. I was previously just using powders and pastels for highlights and wheels/trucks, but using it as a full blown weathering technique intrigued me just from a time perspective. My previous bulkhead I washed and washed, I lost count on how many applications I did, and I think it had a nice aged look to it. This time I was just trying to see if I could speed up the process, and I'm pretty happy with it thus far. I've been mixing the oil washes and streaks with water based touch ups for dark rust spots or damage as to avoid long delays of drying and aggravating the previous layer, and that's been a big plus also.

Thanks for the reply, I may have to try what you did. I have two of the bulkhead flats and only took one out of the box. I tried several acrylic washes but I never got the effect to where I liked it...it still looks like a sour lemon Warhead.

Not in the form of a wash, but just adding some very small dots of the paint across the model which you brush out? Regarding toning down your yellow I would use Yellow ochre with hints of Zinc white. Also use a little bit of some blueish paint (complementary colour of yellow) like Payne’s gray. Adding a complementary paint enhances the contrast. I prefer to use a very very very slightly dampened brush with odourless thinner, because I’m not after the wash effect. You can watch me doing this in this video (https://youtu.be/BnsOG44ve5s), again just an ordinaire user ;-) Greetings, Gino
