I need to accumulate the common small taps and screws for modeling. I’m assuming given the materials to drill and tap through I don’t need the highest quality. I see a lot of metric sets of small taps but have to piecemeal numbered ones.
A couple questions: 1. What are the tap and screw sizes I need; 56 and? 2. Where’s a good source to accumulate a variety of common screws? 3. If starting fresh, would you stick with numbered screws or would you dive into metric?

Kadee sells 3 piece sets of drill, tap and clearance drill. #2-56, #1-72, and #0-80 cover most common model railroading needs. If you are into brass, then you will need metric tools. McMaster-Carr is a really good source if you are in a city. MMC does ship. I get screws from Amazon. Prime shipping makes that a no brainer for me. The assortment of #2-56 in the photo cost me about ten bucks and has screw heads that work with Tangent and Moloco trucks.

I just made a similar purchase on Amazon and I was impressed with the service and the price.
