The Toronto Model Railroad Club has closed its doors after 67 years in the same location. I regret that I never got to see it in person, or the Canada Central in Montreal, which also now is gone. It made me think: What would be on a model railroader's bucket list of public layouts to see before you die? Which layouts would you want to see before you, you know, kick the bucket? (I'm only thinking of public, or club, layouts--not home layouts.) As for the Toronto layout, the CBC, our national broadcaster, has a segment called Only in Canada. A week ago it featured the end of the club, including the ceremonial cutting of the first gap in the track. I posted a link to it on my blog at cprailmmsub.blogspot.ca/2013/03/toronto-model-railroad-club-closeswith.htmlJohn Longhurst, Winnipeg

Its gone now, but a must see was the Museum & Santa Fe Q-scale (Proto 48?)layout at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Funded by AT&SF it spanned over 60 years before being dismantled to make room for the HO scale replacement
The other layout one should see is the HO scale replacement layout at MSI. BNSF put up 3.5 million dollars towards the build and it may be more fabulous than the Museum & Santa Fe.

The MSI is an amazing layout. I got to visit it a year after it opened and spent an hour or so there watching the great scenes. I had visited MSI as a kid several times and watched the O scale Santa Fe operation also when steam was used on the layout.
Great layout both in the past with O scale and now with HO. BNSF should be thanked for their contribution to our HO world.

The Balboa layout really is amazing since the layout climbs from one floor to the upper floor for the Loop scene, just as the prototype climbs the grade. Each scene looks to be much like the orginal with buildings to represent an older era. Last summer, I got to visit the Greeley Freight Station layout while working in Denver. It also is well worth seeing and the scenes there are amazing. It makes you feel like you are a kid again just to see and take in all of the details and scenes. Larry

The PSMRE layout is remarkable for having several scratchbuilt landmark buildings from the Olympia-Tacoma-Seattle area. Not Space Needles, but well-known factories, power plants, and restaurants.
All three layouts host periodic operating sessions. They are not just displays.

The video is an interview type of the La Mesa model railroad and has some great operating scenes. Check out the Santa Fe on the Loop! Larry

That giant wonderland layout in Germany should be on any modelers bucket list.

That giant wonderland layout in Germany should be on any modelers bucket list. True, but their airport is extremely interesting. Wonderland in Germany is probably like no other any place. Larry

calzephyr - I loved the La Mesa link, thanks for posting. Jim Thanks. I believe there are other videos of the La Mesa club on line. It is really interesting and they run every day since they are in a museum and the show must go on! There are other layouts in O scale, N scale and at least one addtional HO layout in the same building. It really is a great place to visit in Balboa Park in San Diego. I was invited back into the behind the scenes area to see staging and some of the repair work that goes on. Friends of mine from another club have run the layout on an invitational type event. Larry

A few years back, I got to operate on the La Mesa layout. The public only gets to see about 30% or so of the layout. It is simply amazing and is a lot of fun to operate.
