In general, how much thickness to an item does paint add? For example, if I’m trying to match some rod that is 0.022-0.023 thick, what size should I use (before paint)? Paint will be airbrushed in this example.

Take this with a grain of salt, but some googling found this chart: It doesn't state if that's wet film thickness (WFT) or when cured. I would assume 1-2 mils per coat of paint. Application method (airbrush, pad, brush), paint type, and potentially paint color, will have an impact as well. You may just have to bite the bullet and try some test samples to validate for your setup.

I appreciate the reference. 1-2 mils per coat is a good starting point. It looks like I'm using 0.020 rod for this project.

I don't spray paint much now, but I do have some Kadees I painted.
I measured the thickness of the "gladhand" of three unpainted couplers and got .041". I measured the thickness of three others of the same ones, but painted. And got .041".
The paint was flat Testors enamel. One coat, which covered adequately. I will point out that I measured TWO layers of paint, one on each side of the "gladhand". I used a Mitutoyo caliper, not known for being crap.
I'm kinda surprised, 'cause I've been thinking that Testors is kinda "fat". But not in this case.
