Hello Modelers,
I received an email from Model Railroader magazine that they are looking for charter members for their new MR Video Plus content. I thought about subscribing, and the subscription cost of $4.95 per month seems reasonable, however, with the thousands of videos posed on the various video hosting sites do you think it's worth it to have to pay to view?

Things to consider is the topics and how well they are presented. There is a lot of videos on the net and they run the gamut of rank amateur to professional productions.
If MR's are professionally written, filmed, recorded and edited, then the $5 a month starts to seem reasonable, that is if the subjects are engaging. Some home video with bouncing camera, sound in a bucket and the host just talking off the the top of his head is not worth $5 a month or five cents a month.
Another consideration is the feed free of ads. On YouTube you many times have to sit through an ad, before seeing your selection. It may seem trivial, but when you add up all those 15 and 30 second ads you are forced to watch, they become minutes which you never get back.

It may be professionally done with all the bells and whistles, but you can get the same information for free from other sites. P

I say MR needs to leverage their video content like netflicks. You get instant access to all the ooooooooooold MR and TRAINS videos via streamed on demand. Access to the new videos via the same way. If a subscriber wants to purchase a video, enable an iTunes like purchase or DVD shipment for the cost of the video and maybe a bit of a discount.
If they can do this for $5 or so a month, I'd subscribe again.

Alright guys, after my post i decided to check out MR's offer...perhaps i should learn to not shoot first and ask questions later.
First thing, I have an iPad and MR works with the built in news stand. To me thats a great feature. I was able to download a few preview issues and a free "tips and techniques" issue. The photos are nice and high resolution for me to zoom in several times, even small pics. If I subscribe, due to their app working in news stand, each issue will automatically download to my iPad as soon it comes out.
Second, i get the impression they're still trying to figure out their old content both video and editorial. I'm sure as they realize the new digital format's capability, they'll expand whats available online.
Third, all this sold me, I'll be a subscriber come May

If this a recycled version of the Dream, Plan, Build series, I would pass. I am not saying that it is or not, but the DPB series seems to be looking for stuff to cover and after you get about twenty of the videos it seems as though you have seen it all.

The write ups on it in their magazine state that they have hired a "professional" videographer moved David Popp from Managing Editor to "Producer" of Video Plus and have given him a staff to run it. As for the Great America Layout Series (which replaced the Dream Plan Build Videos} they have an agreement with Allen Keller so I don't think they can put his things on Video Plus - I received the latest Great American Layout video today in the mail so I think that rules out their appearances on Video Plus. I am waiting to see what they are producing before I commit to Video Plus.

I thought Allen Keller called it quits with model railroad videos.

I thought Allen Keller called it quits with model railroad videos. He did. Kalmbach may have bought the rights to the Keller library.

If MR turns MRVP into the netflix of train videos.....wow! That could be a nice emerging market to have all the AK vids, old MR Videos, and see if they could licence the Pentrex/smiley videos too. Dang! That'd be cool! I subscribed to MRVP along with my subscription to the mag. The videos are very professional and a few are entertaining as well. Some may not be into the entertainment aspect but i like it

I believe that Allen Keller has licensed some of his videos to Kalmbach. They are showing up in the Dream Pan buld series or whatever it is called now.

Allen Keller retired from making any "new" model railroad videos, but right now advertises and sells what he refers to as "Remastered" VHS on DVD in Railroad Model Craftsman (see page 12 of the April Issue). It would appear that he is selecting some of the more well known layouts that he has done for his DVD remakes.
