What prototype is Walthers HO Budd dome coach based on? Just curious.

That makes sense. I couldn't imagine any American dome that looked like that. The only ones which had the same style were C&BQ, CZ, with corregations that were Budd. I think NP had Budd too but different sides, UP had ACF with smooth sides. Those domes look similar to Jason Shron's Canadian.

Kick me in the Kaboose if its not close, but Wabash had a couple of Budd domes too. MP? IC got a Budd dome or two second hand from MP?
IC leased NP slab sided NP Budd dome sleepers for several winters and both the NP leased cars and the used dome coaches were painted in IC colors. I beleive the NP dome sleepers also ran occasionally on theFloridian SOUTH WIND PRR L&N ACL during winter seasons, but remained in NP colors.
Walthers did their dome in IC colors and is good enough for me as I get lazier as a stand in.

The Delaware & Hudson leased two of the Canadian Pacific's Scenic series dome cars for service on the "Adirondack" in the 1970's. The D&H repainted the letterboards yellow, applied their own roadname and named the cars Bluff Point and Willsboro Point. These cars had an area for food service. They didn't last long on the D&H; Amtrak supplied at least one other dome car and when the D&H applied a joint D&H/Amtrak paint scheme to it insisted that the D&H yellow and name be removed. VIA evventually rearranged the interiors of at least some of these cars; Rapido Trains has also modeled this version that VIA has offered for sale.
The Walthers model of the CP and D&H cars is quite nice. The model Rapido Trains made for their sets of "The Canadian" is even nicer. Sooner or later Rapido will be offering the cars for sale separately, including some in "non-Canadian" paint schemes.
Athabasca Scale Models has had undecorated brass kits for these cars for years.

The Walthers dome is based on the CP dome, but wasn't some of the Burlington's domes a close match too? I know the bottom skirting was different on the Burlington, and for that matter the California Zephyr domes, but from the skirting up, weren't these cars the closest match in the USA?

Jim, The photo from the fallen flags shewing the N&W dome coach, although I model in 0 gauge would an Atlas CZ dome chair car be close enough a model to allow the name Norfolk and Western to be applied and be near enough an authentic model ? Jim Brodie.

If you were wanting a bang on dome with a US prototype get the GN Budd ones. They didn't have stainless steel fluting on the sides, but were still really nice looking.

Unless someone models GN, this dome would be equally as incorrect as the CP dome..... We will indeed be bringing out our CP Skyline in "foobie" schemes, probably before the end of 2014. We're hoping that once you see the detail on our Budd cars, you will embrace their foobiness with all your soul. Each Rapido Budd car has between 350 and 400 parts. The underbodies are not for the faint of heart.... -Jason

Actually, the Walthers GN dome has been done in the later paint schemes in GN Big Sky Blue, GN experimental green/white scheme, BN Hockey Puck, Amtrak Phase I, II, and III - All of these paint schemes are prototype. In it's Amtrak Phase I life the dome saw service on the Floridian, San Fransisco Zephyr, Empire Builder, North Coast Hiawatha, and Coast Starlight along with pinch hitting on other routes as well. In the Phase III era the Amtrak dome saw service on the Auto Train, City of New Orleans, and Capitol Limited along with the Kansas City Mule. So the dome traveled the US. The downside though is no prototype power to pull it i.e. no SDP40F [ ] I'm game if you want to do a skyline in D&H. I think that would do well for you Jason. BTW, the Rapido Canadian cars are OUTSTANDING in detail. I think it would be great to focus on some pocket streamliners such as the Skeena and Atlantic too!

The GN dome is correct for Amtrak as well. Though did it ever run in BN colours? Looking at photos of rainbow era trains, it seems that very few cars actually got BN paint before Amtrak came along. -Jason

There were not many that got painted in BN green. I'm not a BN passenger man by miles, but in short the BN did not want the passenger business and quickly started trimming things down. With literally only a year-and-a-half existence before Amtrak there was not a lot of equipment that made it to green and only publicity type trains had a solid consist. Otherwise they were a true rainbow with green/orange, big sky blue, green/white, and stainless steel in the mix.
