I'm going to be getting a new subscription to... something for Xmas. That something, however, is a bit up in the air. I was considering re-upping my sub. to Model Railroader, but now I'm kind of leaning away from it.
The thing is, I find that I get the most value out of the layout showcases, and -- sadly -- both the quality and quantity of these per issue of MRR seems to be fading. It may be silly, but I'm a visual learner, and I tend to far more often just look at someone else's work, say "hey, I think I can do that," and go for it, than I do follow a list of instructions or diagrams. Also... MRR's reviews are kind of... useless. They remind me of the old Nintendo Power of the early 1990s -- EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! But, the thing is, we all know everything isn't always awesome, and a lot of models have performance or design flaws that MRR seems to routinely gloss over.
I guess my ideal would be 12 months of Great Model Railroads and Model Railroad Planning, as these are -- bar none -- the most valuable two magazines I purchase every year. Since that isn't possible, what comes the closest to this? Other than lots of pictures, the only other thing I'm looking for is 90%+ American prototypes (I don't model the U.K., so I don't take a lot away from looking at their creations), and absolutely no three-rail O. Anyone have any suggestions for a good magazine to sub. to?

Hello Princess, and welcome aboard.
If you haven't done so yet, subscribe to the online Model Railroad Hobbyist Magazine. Subscription is free and, imho, it often contains articles that are enjoyable to read. The editors are model railroaders. Here is a link:

BTW: I read your post on another thread about your limited space. You're in good company as a significant number of HO and N modelers today only have room for a shelf layout. Please keep us posted on your progress.

MR and Railroad Model Craftsman don't really offer a lot of layout showcases but at least they show a few. I buy both every month but as advanced as I am in the hobby both don't offer me a lot of info. For what your looking for your probably better off to just Google layouts and look at what comes up. Honestly everything you read in the magazines can be found for free on the internet. Model Railroad Hobbyist Magazine is a good resource for info as well.

Instead of subscribing to something, I'd suggest picking up back issues of the now defunct Railmodel Journal. The magazine usually featured a layout every issue. The layouts choose were layouts based on an actual prototype and not generally free-lanced. Also, if you are looking for inspiration on layouts back issues of another defunct magazine, Model Railroading would be a good choice.
Model Railroader of late, tailors their magazine towards attainable results by the more entry level hobbyist. Even someone that has been in the hobby for only a short period of time may find some of the stuff in MR as over simplified. I still remember from the early 2000's when Lionel Stang(sp?) went on for about three or four pages on "how to organize your strip and sheet styrene building supplies". Another Stang "Working on the Railroad" monthly column dealt with organizing tools or something of that nature. First I thought of was this guy must arrange his shorts by the day of the week.
Most model railroad magazines are not what they used to be twenty years ago. Investing in back issues of Mainline Modeler(best magazine ever), Model Railroading, Railmodel Journal and older MR's and RMC's may prove more fruitful than current offerings.

Trainlife has a lot of the RMJ articles online. There is also Model Railroading and a few others. It's a tremendous resource for finding older articles and such.

Check it out on Trainlife and if you must have paper between your fingers locate the physical issue on e-Bay or some other source.

All good suggestions above. I'd like to add one that I subscribe to : Model Railroad News. www.modelrailroadnews.com/Check 'em out. I find they review items fairly, and not "everything is great" type of comments.
