The following items are offered direct or at dealers that are participating. It would seem that they are blowing out items that are not selling quickly. That is good and bad. Good for us to get lower prices and bad if the dealer does not get involved in the deal. I would guess the dealer has a chance to purchase the blowout items and a much lower cost, but what does he do with his items on the shelves. This is the type of sale blowout that BLI used to get rid of their stock and the dealers were the ones holding on to old stock. Larry

I may have to act on some of the tank cars, since I've depleted my LHS of these cars already.

Careful, the "average customer rating" on those tank cars is "0.0"!

They have an "average customer rating" of 0.0 probably because they are not rated at all. Those are very nice cars. Ciao. Raffaele

Thanks for the heads up - I received the Horizon email but usually don't pay too much attention to their ads. However, this was definitely a good deal - I ordered 3 of the plain black GATX tank cars, which I missed out on when they first came out.

I have a few of the tank cars I picked up as undecs for 8 bucks each at a train show. They build up into some beautiful models and have tons of variations you can do with a single kit (I also used some of the leftover parts to detail some older cars). After I got those, I had to spring for some painted ones. As I've been discovering lately, I don't have nearly enough tank cars. I need some overtime so I can pick up a few more!

Phtttttt.... The ONE item in the list I'd want I've already bought at higher price... If Horizon keeps this up - selling direct at 50% discount - I'm going to stop pre-ordering stuff from them.
BTW, the GATC tanks for sale look to be the ones they did not put commodity placards on. IMHO they are nice cars but are way overpriced (at full MSRP), and the sales (or lack thereof) appear to have shown that.

I feel the say way about pre-ordering any stuff since there is a chance the item will be blown out in a few months. The problem is we never know when an item is popular or not until they are sold out and then it is too late. I never expected the Athearn Turbines to be on a blow out sale and really did not need any more at this time. I did purchase an additional turbine last week but it was the 8500HP and not plastic and it was not really on sale. Larry

Are you saying they didn't mount the placard holders or they did mount placard holders but they are empty? The stock photo of the first one listed on the Horizon site shows placard holders.

I agree..I checked all the on sale tankers photos and the placard was there.

I was speaking of bare/blank placard holders the cars have... Cars with the Chemtrec phone number labels usually have placards whether loaded or empty.
Plus it is a nice touch that I have been told (and have observed) helps to sell the plain tank cars.

Plus it is a nice touch that I have been told (and have observed) helps to sell the plane tank cars. I think its a stretch to call them botched. Most tank car models introduced over the past 30 years have empty placard holders. Rare is a decorated model delivered with placards. As far as the prototype is concerned, there is no requirement for the placards to be displayed on a residue car. If there are placards still in the holders after a car has been emptied, it's only because the customer didn't remove them. If the car is loaded, it's a different story. Then all four placard holders must contain the correct placard. If a lack of a placard decal causes these cars to lose half their value, I'll start hunting down models with empty placard holders. Then I will fill the holders with Highball or Microscale decals.

Rare is a decorated model delivered with placards. Not on recent tank cars over $25 !!! Look at the Athearn 29900 gal tanks in RTR line and you'll see most have them. Many of the other Genesis tanks have them too (including the several which sold out) FYI. Some commodities DO REQUIRE placards even if only residue (because the remaining fumes may be hazardous, flammable or explosive). BTW, if you want spend extra time and money to do placards you are in the minority...

I was speaking of bare/blank placard holders the cars have... Cars with the Chemtrec phone number labels usually have placards whether loaded or empty. Plus it is a nice touch that I have been told (and have observed) helps to sell the plane tank cars. I think the phone number labels are just becoming one of those standard things to slap on a tank car to cover their bases, just in case some kind of accident happens. Here's an example from Fallen Flags of a prototype car from a group Athearn produced with the labels but no placards: GATX 45805 (Athearn produced 45806): www.rr-fallenflags.org/gatx/gatx45805lsa.jpgThis car is from the group of plain black GATX cars that Horizon was offering in the sale (I bought 3 of them). Here's another example from the same group - both photos show only part of the car, but they appear to show the yellow 800-number label with no placards: GATX 45803: www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=106446Here's GATX 41525 (Athearn produced 41526) with yellow label but no placards: www.rr-fallenflags.org/gatx/gatx41525sea.jpgHere's GATX 12203 (one of the numbers Athearn produced) with yellow label but no placards: www.rr-fallenflags.org/gatx/gatx12203ava.jpgHere's one of the white GATX numbers that Athearn offered in this run, which matches the prototype photo with no placards, but it's an older photo before the yellow 800-number labels were added (the Athearn model matches this 1980 photo, making it era-specific): GATX 44033: www.rr-fallenflags.org/gatx/gatx44033akg.jpgNote also that the Alaska RR cars that were produced in the same run do have placards, so it appears that Athearn was basing the placards vs. no placards on prototype photos. I was just discussing this same topic with a friend over email, who pointed out that a lot of these cars are very common in UAN / urea / nitrates fertilizer service, and that many/most nitrates-based commodities don't require placards. That's the service that I need these cars for, so I'm glad they matched them to the prototype. I personally think that slow sales on tank cars like these are probably a result of the relatively plain paint schemes - while many of us want them for specific operations to match the prototype, the majority of modelers are probably just looking for some interesting cars to add to the layout, so plain black or white tank cars are only going to do so well compared to other cars with more interesting paint schemes. Even as a prototype modeler, I find myself falling behind in the number of tank cars that I should have to model my area of interest - that's why I jumped on this Horizon sale, since I missed out on these cars the first time around. It is amazing how much the danger diamonds dress up a tank car visually on a layout. The latest Athearn cars have them applied.
