the F39B does NOT match the Walthers model, they were Cast Steel, 1 piece flats cast by GSC/Commonwealth. the Walthers cars are F39/F39A cars. Bethleham did build some of the cars. cars built by PRR should have been totally built by PRR,they had several shops capable of complete car fabrication. Spikre None of the PRR F 39 A/B cars were cast. All were welded fabrication. Beth steel in Johnstown Pa built the first 200 cars in 1955.They were all F39's . The additional 300 PRR F39A/B's were built at Sam Rea shops in Holidaysburg Pa.from kits made by Beth steel and shipped to Holidaysburg. Designed for 2 35' trailers. Cars were designed by Beth Steel. Additional 300 F39C's were built for TTX in 1957 , Never lettered for PRR. Wabash bought 20 new F39A's from the PRR in 1958. They were later transferred to TTX. The GSC /Commonwealth cast flats you are thinking of were class F41 on the PRR they were 53' long. The PRR had 500 of them . A few years later Beth Steel and the PRR designed the G 38/39 ore jennies. Again kits manufactured by Beth Steel and assembled at the Sam Rea shops by the PRR. --------- Ken

Keystone, there were Cast Steel F39s,maybe the letter class is wrong, but they were a reality. look thru those links again, the side sills are different on some of the cars, on one car holes in the underframe can be seen. this is similar to the F30 class, originally riveted, then cast steel a couple of orders, then a batch of riveted cars before the last cast steel batch. go back and check RMJ for nice large pics of a cast steel F39. Spikre I think we both are talking about different car fabrication types. I'm talking entire car frame and upper structure like the F41's had The 50 F39b's built in 1955 car # 470750-470799 did have cast underframes only versus the welded fabricated one used on all other F39's. Those are the cars that had the holes in the underframe. The Walthers car is correct for all the other F39's that were built using the fabricated underframe. Walthers picked the right one to do the most common car. ----- Ken

Keystone, GSC/Commonwalth had a large line of Cast Steel Underframes available. Santa Fe got Tank car underframes that just needed the top courses completed to be a full tank car. there were 40' cast steel Boxcar/reefer/stock car underframes. Gondola underframes in several lengths. and Flat cars in 42',50', 53', 60', 75',these were general service flats. several Heavy Duty types to 250 ton capacity, several Well Hole HD Flats. in most cases the Castings would be shipped from Edystone or Granite City to the assembly Shop,or Car Builder, this sometimes muddies the fact that many were 1-piece castings that just needed trucks, air brakes, and a deck added to complete the car casting.the decks could be wood,Nailable Steel,Tread Plate steel,or flat steel sheets. the decks on the PRR GSC F39s were likely wood, and applied at the shop chosen to assemble and finish the cars.
