For those that don't know, LAJ was owned by Santa Fe. The "difference" between the LAJ & Santa Fe blue is because Santa Fe's blue was painted over yellow & LAJ's blue was painted over black. All LAJ ever had to do to get Santa Fe blue was to go up to Hobart Yard about 1/2 mile to get the blue paint. When were the LAJ units painted black (pre-blue)? Were they delivered in black?

omaharoad When you took cars to the LAJ A Yard, did you pick up cars from their B Yard? Back in your day there were B Yard tracks for each of the four interchange RRs. Picked up a BNSF train from LAJ about 16 years ago & we had to double over 3 or more times to put together a 100 +/- car train. I don't think we ever left the (relatively) big "A" yard just east of Downey Rd. Where the office & loco facility are. We'd usually deliver & take one track, there was always the next transfer... Did the "B" yard have yard air? Did you take the BNSF train to Hobart? Four interchange RRS? Don't know about the B Yard having air. By my time at Hobart it was all intermodal. We took it straight to Barstow.

The original paint scheme was all black w/ a white side sill. Here's the builders photo. Note there's no stack. My WAG is Santa Fe had a say in them putting 3' tall cylindrical stacks made in the engine house. Santa Fe put 3' rectangular ones on their S-2 & S-4 ALCOs. Not liking the stacks on the Atlas & Bachmann models, had Shapeways make both kinds.

early S-2s and RS-1s weren't always delivered with Stacks. may have been a $4.99 Option that many roads thought was too steep. and later there were several different stacks depending on which Elliot Turbo was used. Spikre

Spikre Many roads wanted to roll their own. Others thought a lack of a stack would be a great imcentive to go easy on the throttle, since the smoke would go straight into the cab. Ha-ha-ha! Good incentive, for sure!
