Oddly, wasn't Model Railroad news going to go out of business and then came back?
Seems Carstens could have handled this 10000% better.
Good news though in the end.

It isn't quite October, and we already seeing RMC [and Railfan & Railroad] rise from the dead. I hope at the deal works out well for White River Productions [WRP] since it handles the publishing of several of the historical society magazines. IIRC, they picked up Model Railroad News after the first publisher went out of business.

White River Productions is a very professional organization that produces quality output. I was hoping they would buy RMC and I am VERY GLAD they did. I am a big supporter of Model Railroad News and Passenger Train Journal and I will be a big supporter of the new RMC.
This is absolutely wonderful news.

I hope White River is successful getting RMC up and running again. I wasn't a subscriber but did pick up a copy every 3-4 months.

According to the White River news release on their site, The Railfan Press will also come under their umbrella, with Mr. Serensits continuing to run the editorial end. If WRP can offer advertisers some sort of a package deal, they may be able to make a go of their new acquisitions.

so White River will also be putting out TRP ? with R&R and CTC Board, isnt this a bit of an overload ? wonder if any will be combined and which will survive in the long run. all they need to corner the non-Kalmbach market is Railpace and Diesel Era. Spikre

Yeah, not much to worry about in terms of quality. WRP is a class act all around. They have a good grasp of the latest publishing trends and technology, excellent graphics work, good editing, etc. If anything WRP will likely improve areas where RMC was weak before and build on the solid base it has. There will be a lot on WRP's plate. But they seem to thrive on this sort of thing and try not to do it all themselves, retaining staff where it worked out for continuity's sake. I've heard nothing yet about the HOn3 and On30 annuals yet. Their fate is apparently still up in the air.

Strange to me they did not pick up the narrow gauge annuals. Annual publication fits WRP's business model well -- better than a monthly. I'm sure the annuals will find a home soon.

The latest I heard was that White River did pick up the book division of Carstens also, which the NG annuals were a part of. However, there has been nothing announced specifically regarding the annuals, so their future remains uncertain, although it would seem their fate is up to White River at this point.

Seems like Mike is right. Ought to be some details of their future with White River coming out of the current narrow gauge bun fight in Kansas. City.

I've seen that happen before, not a magazine but,a very busy well stock hobby shop.

I wonder if the cash ran out or if there wasn't enough lift over to make the Colonel's kids happy? I've seen that happen before, not a magazine but,a very busy well stock hobby shop. The Colonel's been gone for some times, so I'd expect the estate was settled some time ago. Doubt that had anything to do directly with the current difficulties. A magazine's assets are basically it subscriber and advertiser lists, plus the residual income from the various book projects and back issues. Unless it was better capitalized than most publishing ventures, things can be pretty month-to-month even in good times. And it's far from the best of times for publishing in general and RMC saw much of its advertiser base of being the Kalmbach alternative eroded by newer and more nimble efforts. Now, if there were significant property assets somehow associated with the estate besides the magazines, those could've been a factor, as either the need for their sale to convert to cash out shares of the estate or maintenance, repair or other costs can eat away at that and suck up much of the ready cash in an estate. Property taxes, if unpaid, can also pile up and cause problems with estates, depending on how well-organized, well-funded or in dispute among the survivors things happen to be. My guess is that RMC was simply hanging by a thinner thread after the Colonel caught the last train. Throw in the Great Recession and Ad Revenue erosion, and it's a goner. Water over the bridge now. WR will start with a clean sheet and put what they think will work best into what should be a better mix of content and presentation. Things could've been much worse here.
