Great, a pre-made garden hose (didn't we use to make those out out of solder painted green?), but sadly lack 1970's and 80's non-Ford automobiles, and so many other things. Guess model trains is getting like doll houses, where you can <<BUY>> buy anything.

The reason you can not buy those non Ford automobiles (at least the GM ones ) is that the lawyers thing you will buy those $20.+ vehicles and let little Johnny use them for teething relief then sue the manufacturer of the real car when he chokes on the model.

Years ago I made garden hoses by using small green electrical wire I bought at Radio Shack.

Nothing wrong with that - time savers are a good thing in my book. There are so many ways to spend time in the hobby - what limited time I have is going into calculating grades, and bench-work etc.. Anyway, it's the American way. Look for a market and see if there is something that will sell. If it does, it's a little profit. If it doesn't, that item will go out of production.

Jim,That is true..With todays highly detail flat cars and gons one can load them with detailed premade loads.I no longer use straws for pipe loads since IMHO ABS plastic tubing looks better and can be painted in realistic colors.Of course detailed pipe loads are ready available for a few bucks.

Just think how much fun you can have paying $9.or$10. for some nifty little detail you can make your self for about half a buck.Seems to me lately this hobby has got to the point where it's how much money you have to buy something over the pride of doing something yourself.I know the manufacturers are lovin' it but I ain't one of them.

You know, no one said you had to buy the garden hose. There are a ton of things made for this hobby I don't buy (add this one to the list). But why get bent out of shape over it?

The way I look at it, more variety is a good thing in the hobby! I only have so much time, and most of my hobby time right now is going into bench-work and wiring. I'm not exactly fast at it either. I love a lot of todays pre-made loads - they look better than I could make on my own. I've managed to find a number of Athearn's 60' lumber loads - usually with Athearn RTR flat cars or bulkheads and to me they look quite good. There is a vendor at the DC area train shows which offers some nice scrap loads too, with bits of very realistic scrap steel in them that looks right in HO. I've got an Athearn pipe load which isn't bad either. I do eventually plan on trying some loads myself, maybe when the layout is further along - but being able to "actually" run trains after 15+ years (really longer) is my higher priority!

Riogrande,
I am in the same boat. Years ago I did a lot of scratch building, but did not have a layout. Now I am working on a layout and no longer have the time to scratch build anything. If I needed a hose, and I might, I would buy the one shown here.
Respectfully, BNSF Fan

My focus is on building renovation. Time and money are the obstacles. My dream future layout will be western desert as in Pelle Soeberg.

Garden hoses?
Sure.
Something interesting to add to our doll hou... er, Model Railroad Layouts/Dioramas.
Not to mention it's cheap to do and there aren't any licensing fee issues where model cars are concerned. Besides, it's difficult to get a garden hose "wrong".
Superdetailing for many is the key to the hobby and I, personally, really enjoy looking over a layout or diorama and wonder at the effort to make it realistic.
Does that mean I enjoy looking at Doll Houses too?
You're darn right.
I have marveled consistently at some houses I have seen in the past and I'll admit, I pondered for more than a second about creating items for it or even building my own!
Now, if putting details in my HO scale static representation of an engine house is akin to "doll housing".. I can accept that.

Garden hoses? Now, if putting details in my HO scale static representation of an engine house is akin to "doll housing".. I can accept that. And that is cool too! My comparison was more to how in the past, model railroaders would make a detail item from scratch, and from what I saw at the hobby shop back then, the doll house folks would more likely buy it. Now it sometimes seems reversed, as I have now seen "doll housers" make some cool stuff from scratch, while today's "train buyers" whip out the credit card.

The reason you can not buy those non Ford automobiles (at least the GM ones ) is that the lawyers thing you will buy those $20.+ vehicles and let little Johnny use them for teething relief then sue the manufacturer of the real car when he chokes on the model. Then GM or Toyota would have to issue a recall on all of them.

. My dream future layout will western desert as in Pelle Soeberg. I've got a thing for desert scenery too and really like Pete's layouts sans the ultra modern trains. In my case my aim is to go north a bit and do the deserts near the Colorado/Utah border - especially Ruby Canyon.
