Definitely looking good and I will do my Accurail cars someday.First though I think I will do my TYCO,Bachmann and Athearn cars first.Which means the Accurail cars will be in shops in about a year.

That's okay, Johnathan. Slow progress is better than no progress. Besides, getting there is half the fun.

Speaking of slow progress, I got the FW&D car out of the paint shop yesterday. Grabs, cut levers and some reweigh patches to come after the first round of weathering. The two green ones are next....

RC, now You have to do a BN Green C&S car if they had the 4600s ? guess a FW&D would do if C&S didn't have any. Spikre

Spikre, I'm reaching a saturation point on BN predecessor covered hoppers, so I don't think I'll do another one in Chinese red and gray, but I could do a repaint. I'm leaning toward doing another one of these FW&D cars but from the first batch with high brakewheels. It would be repainted in BN green, though.

Ryan i've looked through the tread a couple times and just can't seems to find it if you specified it. But, what size styrene rod did you use for the ladder grabs?

Ryan, awesome work! It's great to see one of these almost completed. I'm a big fan of BN green hoppers, so I'm looking forward to those too. I haven't had a chance to work on my 4600 since you started this, though. I think we'll probably see a new model before I get around to finishing mine!
I'm making slow progress on my PS 4750s, but hopefully I'll have something to share soon.

Agree, you've turned that 4600 into a fine scale model! Now that you've finished it, a company should soon announce an HQ version any day now!

Thanks, Dave and Jim. I sure hope somebody (Scale Trains, hint hint) takes the reins on this and makes us all a high quality model.
The paint has cured on the green ones. I just need to Future them and start the decal process. Once they're done surely we'll be rewarded with a super detailed model.
PS I have an ACF 5250 in the works, too, so hopefully we'll see one of those announced as soon as I finish it.

Very nice - the BN green has been one of my favorites over the years. You've turned the Accurail car into a finely detailed model!
Great Job, Jim

The BN models came out looking great! The BN green looks very good. What brand of paint did you use for the green? Microscale decals too?

Thanks, guys. That's Floquil BN green, which compares very favorably to a paint chip I have. The decals are Microscale's ACF 4650/4600 set.

Is the slight transparency/fade in the white decal built-in to the Microscale lettering, or did you use a special technique to achieve that?

Graham, if you're talking about the large logo, that's what you might call a happy accident. I'm modeling these cars as they appeared in the late 80s, so they will be fairly distressed, which means fading paint on the logo. When I was applying Solvaset to the logos, I realized as the decals were drying that I didn't have the logo decals settled down very well. That caused a little crazing or very fine wrinkling in the dried decal. I applied another round of Solvaset and tried to flatten the decals with a clean pencil eraser, but I didn't improve things much (a little, but not much). Next I decided to apply a coat of Future to the model and then very lightly wet sanded the decals with 1000 grit paper after the Future cured. That got rid of the raised wrinkling and had the added effect of thinning the decals, which up to that point were quite opaque. The first photo in the sequence shows how bad the wrinkling was and how I got a little too aggressive removing the wrinkles. I didn't intend to introduce the large scrape looking marks in the logo, but it shouldn't present too much of a problem in weathering.

I don't trust the "Plate C" paint/decal that Accurail applies to some of these cars. I'm a little late in replying (I was just re-reading this thread), but don't trust CSX's lettering on the prototype either! Their mislabeling on ACF 4600s (and other hoppers) is so common that I'll have to model several of these examples eventually: CSXT 247180CSXT 247787Dave
