www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/920-41372I e-mailed Walthers and asked if the model will have the eight porthole windows removed. Here is what I received. Thank you for taking the time to email us with your question. I did some research and I found out that the Amtrak Locomotive you asked about will have port hole windows in it. They will be painted over but they will be there. Thanks, John xxxxxx Wm. K. Walthers, Inc. 5601 W. Florist Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53218 I had hope they'd be removed, but alas that must not be in the new product budget.

While that pretty much destroys any reason I would have to buy a really cool loco that I don't need (see my interest in the FL9), it is really nice to get a straight answer to a question.
I still pleasantly recall a Walthers rep coming through for me in a most magnanimous way. And they still get residual points for that.

$300 for a Walthers non-Sound E8? Maybe that's a typo(?)...looks like WKW is following the Athearn Genesis practice of listing every grab iron/lift ring detail they add to this model.
Thanks for the info. Jim.

Tough decision to make. This is right in my era of modelling, but....which version to choose....Broadway Limited Amtrak E8 or the Proto version?
Walthers Proto Amtrak E8A gives you the option to buy it with/without sound & DCC.
BLI is releasing the Amtrak E8A next month with DCC/Sound and either a choice of a dummy E8B or one with DCC/Sound.
Both company versions are roughly the same price if you get them with sound.

^Well, the BLI version has the correct roof profile.

Tough decision to make. This is right in my era of modelling, but....which version to choose....Broadway Limited Amtrak E8 or the Proto version? Well, one is set up with head-end power. That would seem to be the one to get to pull those, what are they, Amtubes? But, if you're going to haul steam heated passenger cars, you'd need the BLI ones. So, the choice would be based on which cars you're going to pull. If you care. Ed

The purchasing decision would be easier if someone released an Amtrak E8 in Phase II or III.
