sometime in the not too distant past Detroit and Mackinac RR seems to have fallen off the earth. were they taken over after a Bankruptcy ? did they just sell out to a Shortline Accumalater like Rail America ? or did whoever owned the majority of stock just decide to get into other more lucrative investments ? do know that some of the original D&M RS-2s were still in service about 1980. not bad for 1946/47 built units with the "Horrid" 244 engines in them. The D&M ceased to exist in 1992. It became the Lake State Railway. In 2012 the Saginaw Bay Southern(ex-CSX) was merged into LSRC.
All the D&M ALCo and MLW D&M power is either sold off or scrapped. The LSRC is an all EMD road.

Believe it or not, with no takers at inflated prices the D&M Alco fleet was all scrapped, the prime movers going for use in ships. Some of those engines had been rebuilt a couple times with major upgrades done to the electrical systems.

I was able to get a trip on the D&M several times, the last time being 1977. I was in the U. S. Air Force and was working on B-52 and KC-135 flight simulators. Part of our program was the use of mobile flight simulators, cockpits and support equipment mounted in a pair of railroad cars. The B-52 set was a pair of heavyweight passenger cars that had been converted and the KC-135 set was a heavyweight passenger car and a WWII converted guard car. The cars were hauled in freight trains. One of our routes covered the bases in the Michigan U.P. area, K.I. Sawyer and Kinchloe Air Force Bases. To get to those bases, our simulator cars were hauled to the ferry slip at Mackinac City where the Chief Wawatam car ferry was ready for our cars to be loaded to be transported across the Straits of Mackinac and unloaded at St. Ignace, Michigan. On the trip during 1977 we were hauled by locomotives 469 and 974 to the ferry. Although this did not happen on any of my ferry crossings, coworkers making the trip during winter got an extended stay when the Chief was unable to keep forward momentum due to heavy icing in the straits. They spent a few days in place with snowmobiles coming across the ice to bring supplies and food until the ship could get moving again. First picture shows the front of the first flight simulator car. Third photo shows the flight simulator cars safely tucked away in the deck area. We got to wander around the ferry. It was pretty obvious that the passenger quarters had seen better days. They were mostly stripped of fixtures and furnishings but one could see that at one time there appeared to be first class, second class and last class accommodations.

Spikre That is an ex DT&I GP35 you saw the picture of. The AA GP35s that haven't been scrapped still continue to work for AA/TSBY successor Great Lakes Central.

Great Lakes Central 391,ex Ann Arbor,Diesel Era,november-december 2009,Vol-20, number 6,page 54. K-9, great pics as usual ! D&M 974,was that rebuilt by M-K ? from ?? D&M 1280 should be an ex-PRR/PC/CR C425, rebuilt by GE Hornell,or M-K Hornell ? D&M 481 should be an Original RS-2 from 1948,and kept in great shape by D&M. D&M did get the 1st RS-2 built,# 467,frame 73646,shipped 10/30/46. an interesting Alco powered road. Spikre
