Some photos of the Crandall
Its pretty simple modeling that anybody can do. Nothing really spectacular. Hopefully it will be better than the brass OMI version.

Opened up the HEP area. Dumped the ugly Proto 2000 rear door for a much better Details West door.

Some of Union Pacific E8's and 9's both A's and B's had a ladder instead of grab irons to access the roof. The Crandalls had the ladder as did the former UP A's that CNW picked up in the early 1970's, when the formation of Amtrak made many UP E8 and 9's surplus. I scratch build the seven rung ladder. Using photos to judge the length and width, this is what I built. Its made out of brass bar stock and wire. Everything is soldered. Here is the rear of the Crandall with the Detail Wests rear door in place of the poorly done door by Proto 2000. Union Pacific added an opening in the winterization hatch above the fan that draws air into the engine room for roots blowers of the 567C's. The square opening behind the Farr grilles is where the fan draws air. But the Union Pacific found that the E8's and 9's struggled to get enough air for proper combustion. So they added a screened opening above the fan which is not seen in the winterization hatch. To keep snow and rain out of this opening the UP added shields. When the units became CNW commuter power, CNW plated over the added opening and removed the snow shields. The feet of the snow shields brackets remained. To model the brackets and the patch, cue etchings from John( onequiknova) Thanks John! Hope my feeble modeling abilities don't make you too unhappy! The screening on the winterization hatch is from Plano Models. Its included with Plano's Farr grille set. Thanks Keith!

Any thoughts on the plow? I was thinking to roll my own as modelmaker87 did over on the protomodeler forum. It looks like the North Western probably bent it in-house so it's not a complicated shape.

I don't recall seeing a picture of one, but did any of these ever get RTA paint?

I don't recall seeing a picture of one, but did any of these ever get RTA paint? Nope. All went to scrap in CNW colors.

It looks like the North Western probably bent it in-house so it's not a complicated shape. 0.010" or 0.015" plastic heated over the gas fireplace and bent is the plan. I need to get a drive for it. The frame of the drive I had for it shattered into many different pieces. It was one of the E8 drives from Life-Like that had frame problems.

While far from any great modeling, this build has been far from a "piece of cake". I know when it comes to great modelings I'm no Onequiknova, but this unit has been a challenge. One note, is if I do another Crandall, I'll start with a BLI E8B. The basketball curved roof of the Proto E8 model is one reason the building of the number boards and headlight is not spot on to the prototype. Just too much curve to the Proto roof. I finished the pilot. I shall now throw a celebration as the model is ready for some stagecoach yellow and CNW green. The pilot is made out of 0.015" plastic sheet which I heated and bent. It was done to two halves much like the prototype. The cut bars are scratch built using 0.012" brass wire with DA cut bar brackets. The air hose is a DA part. The bracket to hold up the hose from dragging is DA brass bar stock. The brace is some Evergreen solid tube stock. The step is Evergreen L-stock with Evergreen channel stock on top. Its very close if not exact to CNW 506. Each Crandall had different pilot bracing points and steps. No two were alike. The coupler is body mounted. I built up a pad on the nose of the shell to mount the coupler.

Only thing I can say is if it's not spot-on, it's because you started with the P2K unit. Nice work.
I was hoping to get the first good model of a Crandall done, but you've beat me to it!

I know what's its like to be critical of your own work. I have yet to build something where I thought I couldn't have done it any better. That's how we get better. I'll have to check on those etches. I can't remember if I order anything MRE than the test etches.
