I looked for a photo of Roco's Army 2-8-0 and found one. Well, sorta. Roco was showing a 3D printed version. Rapid prototyping, for sure. I fell for these engines when I visited Fort Eustis in '63. I even saw a triple-headed runby. Most excellent. There were 2120 of these made. There were 3982 SD40-2's made. Sadly, for American modelers, almost all went far away. Here's one (the trailing loco) working: It might be tempting for a person to de-export one for use on a branch-line. On an HO layout. I would be tempted to raise the cab and maybe put a taller stack on. Ed

Oh, yeah. There were five of them on the Alaska Railroad, I think: Ed

Rivarossi is showing a Heisler, Big Boy, and this 0-6-0, another US Army export.

?? are the Rivarossi Big Boys and Hieslers the old models ? or All New Tooling versions ? would like to see Rivo put out their early 50s 35' Box Van and 30' Gasoline Tank Trailer again. missed them in the early 60s and they are rite below the Lindberg U25B on the Collection list here. Spikre

Oh, yeah. There were five of them on the Alaska Railroad, I think: Not only that, but one of the Alaska RR S-160s has been under restoration for the past several years. See www.557.alaskarails.org/.

Fascinatin' reading! Here's a shot of, as far as I could see, the only one of the S160's to have done "regular work" in the lower 48: The drivers are only 57", instead of the pretty common 63" used on US 2-8-0's of the era. It's a pretty small loco. The railroad itself looks kinda interesting to a model railroder. Ed

Ed, 2-8-0s were rather passé by the mid 40s,but BAR did get the last one built for U.S. service around 1946. Export locos were different sort of Critters, with Baldwin building 2-8-2s and 4-6-2s as late as 1955 for India. Spikre

Spikre,
Yeah, I s'pose there weren't too many American railroads of ANY size who were hankering after steam locos, then.
Almost all of the S-160's were exported (except for 12 for Alaska and 3-4 for Fort Eustis). And the lucky folks who received them were probably not too interested in returning locos that were actually being used. And then there might have been a lack of interest by our government on handling the return shipping.
Still, I might bend reality a bit and pick one up for my logging railroad. It's already bought an old LS&MS 4-6-0 with 80" drivers for pulling the 4th of July picnic train (the company president thought it looked "grand"), so a 2-8-0 is hardly a reach.

I'd love to see a S160 next to a domestic US mainline steam engine of the same era.

Perhaps you could develop that theme a bit further. You know, compare and contrast. And all that. Ed
