Well, I could, but that would blow my already limited budget for Blackstone Ks The Tunnel Motors remain very attractive. Just a trio is hardly a start on a fleet, but another trio would be sweet. I need to get over this student thing... Cost is a big factor for me too, especially with a daughter in college, and with the SP SD40R's hitting the market ahead of them, I'm going to have to try to brace myself! Maybe sell a few more trains - that are too new/late. Mark, so hurry up and get those P2K Gp30's converted so Athearn can announce the Genesis GP30's! I have 7 as well, but don't have KATO chassis for them at this point, and of course the nose light .... Genesis units would solve that problem. Much as I wish there would be a Genesis GP30 I'm doubtful, the original P2K shell is actually pretty nice and at least as I understand it Walthers has nicely upgraded the drive, so I don't think it's going to happen. My Kato '35s and Atlas '40srun together very nicely and the '30s need to do the same since they were all seen working together on mainline trains thru most of the '70s.

Ahem. Not to mention these little beauties: Oooooooh...pretty... Please note these Athearn models will have the unique to New Haven extra water tanks on the running board behind the cab. This also means they have a different handrail shape...again, totally unique to the New Haven. This will be the most "NH" GP9 ever made (outside of brass...if they even made any), and I can't wait to see them! So Paul did you hear me squeal like a little girl all the way from Florida?!?!? Between these and the Rapido FL-9's it will be a banner year for New Haven modelers!

Interesting data for the Challengers. Dual generators and twin smoke stacks!!!!! It seems the data is generic for the Union Pacific Challengers. I have the Z8's both in NP and SP&S and the data is not for either of those locos. This is an interesting model and should sell well. Larry

NP A-3 Northerns would also make SP&S people happy. And would likely get them a model of SP&S 700: Ed Of course instead of the obvious A-3, they could go for the four aces instead.

You may be right Mark. I would probably be happy if Walthers offered the an upgraded Proto 2000 GP30 with the correct low nose headlight however, if Genesis didn't ever do a GP30. The down side to Walthers is they seem to be slow to offer new projects, and when they do, they take longer to get to market than Athearn. I will hang on to my 7 P2K D&RGW GP30's as insurance until then, but lack of time and other "to do" list items - I'm not sure when I'll be able to work on the GP30's.

Well this announcement just completely turned my purchasing plans upside down... Regarding the GP40-2's. I was planning on purchasing both of the two offered GP40-2's from the Atlas run that is expected any day now in the Florida East Coast scheme. Now that Athearn has announced a Genesis batch of four FEC GP40-2's, I am torn what to do. The Genesis GP40-2's seem to have more roadname specific details and more details overall. The Atlas has LokSound whereas the Genesis has Tsunami. The Atlas also doesn't have ditch lights at all (if I recall) whereas the Genesis has functioning ditch lights. I was hoping you folks could help me in making an informed decision, I don't really have much experience in Diesels from either manufacturer. It seems like the Genesis model will be much more accurate to the prototype than the Atlas will be. Should I just hold my money for the Genesis models? I guess I am looking for a reason why I would purchase the Atlas model, is there a saving grace for them? The webpages: Atlas Master Line and the Athearn Genesis

The only downside they have is a not perfect assembly quality track record. As for saving grace, the Atlas model is perfectly good to use and enjoy.

The P2K GP30 is one of the nicest shells made. It's dimensionally very accurate, comes apart nicely, and is easy to upgrade with just Cannon fans. But on the cheap, I found if you just yank the circuit board your P2K GP30 will MU flawlessly with a Kato GP35. That's probably more critical for Soo and GM&O fans, though, with the AAR trucks.

I think the shell is great, the drive at best is ok, the chassis casting and the fuel tank (plus the fact that you can see a lot of daylight thru the forward half of the tank) make the chassis close to worthless for me. I'll have 7 surplus (complete with their cracked gears cluttering up my bench soon enough) I'm just glad to have found enough Kato '35s at good prices to replace them all - Flawless MU with other Kato units like SD45's and Atlas '40s

Since we've mentioned GP30's, out of curiosity does anyone have experience with the newest Bachmann GP30. The consensus is that the P2K has been broadly panned since Bachmann has made significant improvements in their chassis - what are they like - has anyone had the chance to run any for a while? Mind you, I am fully aware that the KATO drive is the gold standard, and I would never expect Bachman to be a suitable sustitute - mostly just curious.

For me the most welcome announcement Athearn posted March 27 was of Genesis GP7's with cabinets for head end power equipment at the end of their long hoods painted as Boston & Maine 1555, 1558, 1561 and 1562 in their original maroon and imitation gold livery. These units were built in the early 1950's to handle commuter trains serving Boston's North Station. They're expected in February 26.

And for me, also the walkway water-tank New Haven GP9s. I wonder if it's prototypical to have a Boston & Maine GP9 pulling Boston & Maine Osgood-Bradley cars I already have from Rapido?

Wasn’t there a rumor that Athearn “is” doing an SDP40F? Any update on that?

Re: SDP40F. I am only aware that the SDP40F was one of the top most wanted diesels in the Athearn poll conducted a year or two ago. To date, I have not read anything about Athearn actually working on bringing that model to market, only people saying *winky winky* that it will be coming. So rumors, maybe, but something concrete, not that I know of. If there has been comment by Athearn in the past 6 -12 months, I've like to hear it.

Re: SDP40F. I am only aware that the SDP40F was one of the top most wanted diesels in the Athearn poll conducted a year or two ago. That poll was done in January of 2013. And the top three are either available or in production. Coincidence? You be the judge! Ed

Wasn’t there a rumor that Athearn “is” doing an SDP40F? Any update on that? Yes, there was a rumor and some of us probably started it, not Athearn. Many seem to think if a rumor is going around, some manufacturer might pick up on it and produce the wanted item. Larry

I'd love to see the SDP40F made, and being one of the top most wanted diesels certainly seems a good thing - but with the changes in Athearn staff since then - it's hard to say if the ball is rolling the same direction. Even at this rate if Athearn does announce it, it will be mid-2016 before they are available which is good as I'll need time to save some clams.
