Would anyone happen to know approximately when Athearn transitioned from the white cardboard trays with twist ties to foam inserts for packaging locomotives during the "Blue Box" era?
Thanks in advance for any information.

I've seen pictures o the first run of SD40-2's in the cardboard tray. I believe the model was introduced in 1982.

It happened in the 1990s. Exactly when I don't know but I would guess in the second half not the first.

With the coming of my first job in high school, i bought my first Athearn, a SP U33C. That was in 1985, and it had the foam inserts.

I have a first run SD40-2 box with the cardboard, but I think with the introduction of the GP38-2 or GP40-2 they switched to the foam. Plenty of older stock around right to this day with the cardboard, though.
