Now that we have the Walthers train about half done...I'm wondering what other cars could be added to this consist in the time period of 1957-62? I mean with the three E8/9s on the point...we've got some room to grow. How about the Walthers PS 10+6 car, and the PS 10+5 in Beano, for starters. I also noticed that there was no head end stuff for this consist, other than the bagg / dorm / lounge. When I saw the train in '67, seems there were maybe three to four cars worth of HE, but the specifics are now forgotten. Suggestions, ideas? Thanks!

Jaygee: What you want to do is go to the B&ORR Historical Society website, and order from the Company Store--http://www.borhs.org/Shopping/index.html--some of the Passenger Train Consist Books for the time period you want to model. These will give you the exact cars, and their order in the train, for the dates covered by the consist book. I am modeling the Cap in Summer, 1959, when it was down to nine cars as an all-room train. Back that up to the summer of 1958, and you'd be looking at a train up to 13 cars long, including multiple 16-4 and 10-6 sleepers, and a leased UP Alpine 14 section sleeper (painted B&O, but lettered with UP fonts). And yes, at various times the Cap carried head-end equipment, at the very least an RPO. Don't you live in the Pittsburgh area? If so, contact me off list. Thanks! mrbando has some good advice about the Consist books the B&ORRHS offers from their Company Store. You may find other suitable cars in the form of craftsman type kits from Bethlehem Car Works and NKP car. Walthers B&O Plan 4167 smooth side 10-6 cars were part of the Capitol Limited from 1950 to the end of B&O passenger service. The Walthers version B&O 10-5 is also suitable, generally 1957 and earlier. Heavyweight sleeping cars were common until around 1957, but modernized heavyweight coaches were periodically incorporated into the consist. Head end cars were assigned at different times. The best way to determine the consist for any given period is to refer to Consist books and Public Timetables.

That "Alpine" car sounds like a great one, provided there is such a thing in HO! I figured the Walthers PS smoothies would be OK...it just makes sense. I will buy some extra cars from the standard set as well, so as not to duplicate car names.

SoHo imported a brass one ca. 1970's. Or, you can roll your own using sides from Union Station Products or Laser Horizons, and a Train Station Products ACF core. It is a shame that Walthers didn't do the Alpine cars when they did the UP City of passenger trains a couple of years ago.
