Hello Fellow Modelers, I wanted to share my latest build with you. I started with an Undecorated Kato SD40-2. I used a 3D printed cab from a designer off of Shapeways.com, airbrushed floquil paint, Loksound Direct Select Decoder, Railmaster Hobbies High Bass 28mm speaker, Monster LEDs, Microscale decals, and added all the grab irons and lightly weathered the trucks with weathering powders and an airbrush. It was a fun build. Runs like a Kato... Brad

The parking brake stand was included with the 3D printed cab. A nice touch. You have to paint and decal it though. Those safety stripes were some work...

Looks great. Do you have close up photos of the cab? How was the quality compared to an plastic injection cab

I've looked at photos of the Prototype CSX SD40-3's, and can only say that the engineering department at CSX wasn't looking for esthetics with the design.
Nice build and use of modern technology.

No they certainly were not...Always looked like the folks at Lego were asked to help out. It's grown on me though. brad

Looks great. Do you have close up photos of the cab? How was the quality compared to an plastic injection cab Here's the only couple of cab closeups I have. In the one, the windows are masked. (Please forgive my kids' superhero figures in the background, I promise they're not mine...)When I removed the masking after clear coating the decals, the cab really popped. The glazing set (off ebay) was well worth it. Fit like a glove. As far as this cab goes, I can say it was a way better built cab than the sd60E 3D printed cab I got from Shapeways. It was square, showed no tendency to warp, and was not at all brittle. I personally have never cast my own plastic molds, but this one seemed well constructed. It was very easy to clean up, prime, and paint.

In that second photo, it could used a dust off and I reworked the MU hose later...I also later added the grab iron between the numberboards which was a major pain...

Any issues with the leds and the DW ditch light housings? or are those the factory kato housings? No, none. This is the latest release Kato so the ditch lights are integral to the front handrail. The handrail then fits into a thin plate that fits into the front porch. The wires are threaded under the porch. The 3d cab does not effect the ditch light/front porch area and is designed for the Kato model. The rear ditch lights are Details West (243 I believe) that I just drilled holes for both in the back porch and in the pilot for the wires. Pretty easy. I used canopy glue on the leds as it allows removal of ever a problem and also insulates the wiring from the metal sides of the DW ditchlights to prevent shorting. The front Kato ones are plastic.

Looks good. The CSX cab is a lot better looking than the old ATSF rebuilt F units of old. They're just different.

Thanks for the cab photos. What kind of leds were used for the ditch lights... smd? Yes they are smds. I used Al's 'Monster' leds (about my 4th order). Al if you read this, I did have a couple duds, particularly on the headlight ones. No biggie. brad

Brad, great work. I never cared for the dark blue CSX because they tend to fade real fast and get dull. Yours on the other hand looks sweet. The yellow makes the blue brighter or pop like you said. 3D printing ... I'm still stuck with a t square and a pencil. Btw, your kid has great taste in superheroes. Especially "Black Widow". !!! Jl

Jl Thanks...Well I have to say with a fresh coat of paint fully protected in dullcoat and operating in the pristine 68-75 degree confines of my house, the paint job should remain unfaded for awhile. (: I love the versatility that 3D printed material has opened to us as modelers. That said, I'm not a techie and I don't have much interest or willingness to design anything. I do know that it has opened a whole new realm to modelers where we are no longer held hostage to the major model producers and what they think will sell and how long they take to bring it to market.
