That's a nice shell. How long did these things last?
Do these have the same wheel base as the other the Baldwin DR 4-4-1500 "sharknose".
I think ARHS also offered the conversion kit to make the LV sw8 pup from the proto sw8.

I'm the odd duck who 1) is under 40 and models the 1946-1957 time frame and 2) totally wants a Black Maria set. Not gonna happen, though. Kalmbach's Classic Trains magazine had a pretty great article a few years back about their brief demo run with some solid pictures.
A BLW babyface freight A-B set would be most appreciated. Again: not holding out.
On the other (transition-era) hand, would someone other than Bachmann (RAPIDO!) make a bulletproof GE 70 and 44 tonner?

Hi Spikre I am working on a Black Maria resin shell made by a guy in Hungary. He is a very accomplished modeller and photos of his completed Black Marias and Baby Face Baldwins are exceptional.
I must add, these are N-Scale shells. Please excuse the non Alcos on my workbench. It won't happen again!!! Cheers Steve New Zealand

there does seem to be some interest in the "Balack Maria's",would it be enuff for a "Hybred Unit" ? Brass or Resin Shell with a standard cast frame with plastic details ? Info: there is enuff info on these units for a Soft Cover Booklet, why Preston Cook hasn't done that already is unknown. search around a bit and the info does turn up. also thought that Alco Fans would like a set to complete the Alco Cab Unit line up from DL-103 to FPA-4. New Haven fans modeling 1945/46 need at least one of these units to match the one regeared to run with the DL-109s for awhile. not sure if they have been done in Brass, but the original GM&O FA-1s would need to be done also, being a bit different from FAs that came after them. Hi Steve, that is a nice looking shell, when will the HO shell arrive ? what other units ?? have You read: Morristown and Erie Locomotives and Cabooses 1895-1998 by Rudy Garbely ? don't have a local store now,so havnt seen it yet,and Rudy was always helpful at Atlas Forum, but not sure He moved over here ? what is significant about 1998 ? did new owners take over ? or was that the year Ben F. died ? or the year M&E bought an EMD ? will be looking to see that Maria shell finished, will it go on a Roco or Proto FA-1 chassis. still cant belive after all the years its been out, late 60s ? that Yugo still cant figure out they produce an FA-2,not an FA-1 ? maybe that's why they went bust awhile back ? Seriously, this is the sort of unit that if you want one, why not build it yourself? The nose is always the toughest part so maybe someone could do that on Shapeways, maybe a whole cab from behind the doors at a good break point forward. For there, the rest is trivial, more or less. Cause if it's even on some manufacturers build list, as slow as the whole brass market is these days, they'll get to it in about 2312.

Hi Spikre Sadly, I don’t think an HO scale version is on Zsolt’s to do list, but I can check if you want. He has produced a resin Babyface Baldwin, Seaboard or NYC versions. I have some parts he made so I can make a CNJ version. The parts are excellent. He was looking for someone to take over the Baldwin molds at one time, so I don’t know if he is still producing them.
I have read Rudy’s book, even have a photo published in it. I keep in touch with Rudy, he has my dream job! 1998 was the end of the Ben era, though not the end for the Friedlands. His son Steve is still a big part of the M&E. Ben bought the first EMD in 1996, the SW-1500 # 20 that now carries his name. Ben was my Best man when Laura & I were married. Great to see 18 & 19 still in charge of most of the Morristown based work. Hopefully they will survive a few more years so we can see them on our next visit.
Back to an N-Scale version of the actual topic. I will post up dates of my project, somewhere, probably the diesel detailers forum. I do need to get a Walthers chassis for it. At present it’s sitting on a modified Walthers/LL FB-1 chassis, that is intended for an Alco C-415.
Cheers Steve New Zealand

Here are a couple of photos of Zsolt's work. His completed Black Marias are equally stunning.

Very nice work there. I hesitate to say, "...for N scale." They're fine in whatever scale, just ever more Npressive in N.

?? which NYC Baby Faces ,the Passenger or Freight units ? somehow NYC missed the Baby Face Grand Slam by passing on the big 2000 HP units, and the Centipedes. am sure it was read somewhere that the CNJ,NYC and MP units are all different lengths, the CNJ the shortest, the MPs the longest. the MP units were actually dual Service with Steam Generators in them that gave them the extra length. the NYC Passenger Baby Faces were rebuilt about 1957 with EMD 567s and the big GSC Passenger trucks as on PAs and the Passenger Sharks. Baldwins are a real tuff loco to pin down and get correct. the Bowser RS-12s are only good for several small orders. Spikre

Here is an update on my Black Maria, DL-202. Sorry about the N-scale intrusion. And to really take this off topic, but not the first time, a photo of my rearranged Babyface shell. Due to the number of "cut and pastes" from the original NYC version shell parts, there's a lot of filling and sanding to do. Still have to make the openings for the numerous air intakes. Cheers Steve NZ

Steve, You have 2 reasonable shells there !! the screened side vents look slightly large on the Alco, but overall its a good shell for now. You have more work to do on the CNJ Baby Face, never recall seeing them, but didn't travel in CNJ territory much until after 1970,mostly NY&LB before that, and they were passenger trains. and did walk the Bayhead Loop once,by that time the line to the South had been pulled up for a number of years, and didn't see any easy to spot traces of it. did go looking for the M&E several times, and found tracks once, but never did see any trains.think starting near the EL Caldwell branch was the problem.should have started in Morristown. Hi Spikre The easiest way to find the M&E is from the westbound exit of IS287, which takes you straight to Abbett Ave. Take a left just before you cross the tracks, and you will be right at the Railfan friendly M&E shops. It's not as romantic as Niagara Falls, but it's very special to us. Cheers Steve NZ
