That is some really good work on the rust. I'm going to get a tetanus shot now, so I can keep reading.

Monster; BTW - you have not gone nearly far enough for a complete working rust bucket. Back on April 17 I posted about a rust bucket I'd seen (an ex-ATSF CF7 as it happens) on railpictures.net. If you're interested pop on over to the Hunter Valley Lines' blog and take a look at the following post: huntervalleylines.wordpress.com/2015/04/17/site-seeing-april-17/You'll need a tetanus shot before reading it, and you may feel like washing yourself after viewing.

Hey Andrew. I saw the picture of that rusted mess. If someone commissions me to do that engine for them, well then I will surely tackle it. It is not a UP or SP engine so I would not do it for myself. The rustiest engine I have on my roster is one Kato SD40-2 but I have since removed it from the layout as it sits awaiting for me to sell it at some point.

I would enjoy hearing about the construction of the slug. How the existing detail was removed and how the new louvres were added.

That would be interesting to know how to remove those doors on the sides. Nice job! Really rusty. No paint wasted on that prototype unit. This is the new ECO green loco and no flashing led lights. larry

The model is a GP30 but the 2223 isn't. Were all the CSX road slugs lumped into one number series? Did see one going thru Barstow in '98 but have no idea why it did that.

This one has different road number but this is what I loosely modeled it after, Those photos look familiar! I photographed this former GP30 slug in the same location: CSX 2233; drolsen.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=35904This one was working in Cumberland, an hour away: CSX 2271: drolsen.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=42260Did your customer kitbash the model? Great job on the weathering - it does a great job of capturing these hard-working slugs as they appeared in the mid- to late 2000s. Most of them appear to have been repainted by now. Dave

Dave Yes, they are all lumped together in no particular order. First 2 could be GP35 bodies, then a 30 or 2.

The model is a GP30 but the 2223 isn't. Were all the CSX road slugs lumped into one number series? Did see one going thru Barstow in '98 but have no idea why it did that. The 2200 series road slugs were re-manufactured from GP30 and GP35 locomotives. The two locomotive types are mixed together in one number series, no rhyme or reason that I can tell. That rust looks great, but the CSX number chosen (2235) for this model should be based on a GP35, not a GP30. It's fair to say there is no shortage of photographs of these units, they are fascinating, lots of unit specific details... CSX Road Slugs

Hey Al,
Excellent job! Man talk about accurate weathering. Your unit reminds me of why I miss the Seaboard Coast Line so much.
I remember having seen a number of older CSX Geeps that looked a lot like this. I understand that CSX was trying to milk every last ounce of service from the 2nd generation units that are or were in Slug/Control Cab service but it got a bit depressing seeing the same rust-buckets 1 or 2 years later. Seeing them can make it hard to believe that at one time these units often ran in 4-unit lashups, hauling hotshot manifests at 65 mph.

All; You can find some great video of the GP30 slugs in action on YouTube: CSX 2733 GP38-2, CSX 6463 GP40-2 mother and CSX 2270 GP30 road slug pull cars off the CF&E heading to the Lima Terminal A GP30 Road Slug leads as it works Illinois Cereal Mill at Paris IL End of the day, well it's only a question of renumbering. Otherwise still a great build and paint job. Here's another page with quite a lot of photo coverage: link

If the only thing all y'all can pick apart is the road number, I'd say he did good.
