My wife is encouraging me to double deck our N scale layout, and get away from the continuous run. I have a tendency to just sit and watch the trains go around and around. It's also becoming difficult for me to slide through the duck under. Here's what we have now.
The following is a rough draft of what she's proposing.
View of lower level
Lower level yard
lower level industrial
View of upper level
upper level passing siding
Upper level industrial
This is the space we have to operate in.
Some of the restrictions that we have, are a door that opens in, an alcove that will allow some operating space, but access must be left for an attic door, and I don't cope well with sections that I have to fuss with, such as lift out or otherwise removable sections.
Some of the things that she sees in this layout, would be the chance to run the trains though some countryside, trains could pass each other on a really cool bridge, and we could get the feel of actually going someplace, by having three towns. Trains would have to be very short, but that would make the layout feel bigger.
The upper level turntable would be a simple Atlas unit that would be mostly hidden. A single staging track angles back against the wall by the door opening. That's a compromise that my wife is tentatively allowing, but she still wants a removable section with 4 to 6 tracks. She knows my feelings towards removable sections, but she feels that the layout will run much better with it.
I think that she might just talk me into this. So how did she do on her first track plan? If we go with this, what are some of your suggestions?
I was able to upload the track plan by first taking pictures of the plan form the Atlas RTS, and after working with them on Picasa, uploading them to photobucket, and then here.
