To bncascadegreen: I m Lee English of Bowser Mfg. I have been making model trains for a few years and i would be very happy to talk to you about a new company or how to get started (570-368-2379) or email me at bowser@bowser-trains.com. I am not an expert but have some experience. Many of the comments here are negative but that should not stop you if you get a good plan.
Here are a couple of thoughts for you. 1. Consider what is your skill/speciality, what do you have to offer. What are the goals!!! 2. Go to shows, clubs, stores - LISTEN to what people want. 3. Write down this info. 4. Now the research starts. How to make your product. 5. Need to establish price and discounts.
Actual starting a business is not very hard or expensive. I estimate about $1,000 in PA. you need a tax license, business checking account (not absolutely necessary), business advice from a local tax accountant that will help you set up your books. Quicken is a good program One of the big pitfalls is not paying taxes. PAY TAXES If you don't you can get into real trouble. Excel spread sheets for costs, sales and any other info are very usefull.
Good Luck and I wish you well!
