Bobby,
You going to have this one done for the Savannah meet next year?
Boy did I see a project for you. It had your name written all over it. While at the St. Louis RPM meet, I saw a photo of one of those huge whale belly tank cars. The one that rides on the four two axle trucks. This was not your run of the mill whale belly though. The belly portion bulged out like pontoons. It was really cool and as soon as I saw it I thought of you Bobby. Only you could build something like that. I think it would be a REAL challenge to get the bulged belly. Lots of converging arcs.
Anyway, liking this build a lot. You know how to make a freight car come to life.

There is an old expression that says "You can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse".
You've just proved that you can take much less and make it much much better. I'm impressed with your skills with scratch building materials and how NEAT and CLEAN your work is on these projects.
You a true maestro!

Thanks Brian. I have a wood and metal model of that tanker that I built in 1976. It was a Quality Craft kit. Even though it was wood, it went together like a dream. This car was a one off built by GATX and never hauled any cargo. UTLX built a slightly smaller car that went into service for a short time. It was on display at the Galveston RR museum when it was floated off its trucks thanks to a hurricane who's name I can't recall. It was deemed to expensive to repair, so it was cut up for scrap. BTW, it was the first model that I air brushed. Also my first two tone.
Jim, thank you very much. I admire your skills too.
Regards, Bobby

Hi Bobby,
I have increased the storage capacity to 800MB, so there should be plenty of space to post those photos.

Bobby, great work as usual. Can't wait to see the finished model. I went to your link as well and love the Southern 93889 as well. Question, what did you use for rivets on the Southern 93889? George Toman

Thank you George. The rivets were cut from an Athearn snow plow, it has hundreds of them.

Darrell Sawyer donated a NARC Canadian grain hopper so I could use the highly detail parts. They have brass capstans, styrene gears and tracks. The slack adjuster was made using styrene rod and Tichy ends from their freight car detail set.

I have always looked at the Bachmann car and thought that it had good bones, but I never imagined it being transformed like this. It's a real beauty, Bobby. Looking forward to the finish!

This is a good thread; very interesting and nice work. I’m wondering if you could have saved yourself some time and raided a P2K covered hopper kit for some of the hatch/latch details.
It would be nice to see ExactRail, Tangent, or SMD tool up a highly detailed cylindrical hopper.
Great job!

Thank you Mark. I don't think there's anything out there with as much detail as I've done on my hatches, If so, I stand corrected. Besides, I enjoy doing this type of detail.

This was the part of the build that I feared the most. The walk is a combo of Plano 11063 & 10832 for the crossovers. I cut the long walks into 6 parts and trimmed the edges with scissors and filed them. The side is made up of five parts per side. Luckily I only had to use three. The end pieces are two sections that just needed triming. I built a fence on each end of the car so I could determine how long they needed to be and have the ends right for the crossovers. I used ACC to treat the cut ends so they would look finished. The 26 IM brackets had to have the pins removed. I used a gauge to make sure all were the correct height. I sure am glad that's over!!!! Thanks, Bobby

Looking really great! It's going to be a detailed work of art when completed! It would be nice to see ExactRail, Tangent, or SMD tool up a highly detailed cylindrical hopper. Great job! Mark I can't agree more. I've seen examples of that Santa Fe hopper on D&RGW freight trains. I'm guessing it would be popular among modelers of the era that it was seen and probably those got around quite a bit.

Thank you Jim. Well, after I built my cryo cars, BLI is doing them, so maybe this'll work too.

Really coming together.
Sometimes you can work with less and come out with a better model than can be had out of a package.
