I have quite a few HO items I no longer need/want. Where on the internet is a good place to advertise these for sale? A rcommendation for a Yahoo Group or some train forum would be appreciated. NO, I don't want to hear about Ebay. Thanks, Jeff

HOInterchane or HOSwap are the only ones I know about - both seem to have quite a few subscribers who buy and sell. I've bought and sold through both and so far it's worked well.

Depending on where you live at a train show. A decent sized one will get you traffic.

I was just at my "local" and asked how much of a cut he would want if I put my stuff in his used brass case. While I could surely get more out in the big internet world, it would take almost none of my time; and his cut would help support my local shop. Which I think is a good thing.
So, next time I'm out there, I'll be putting up, among other things, two Coach Yard COLA/COSF coaches. 'Cause I just cannot figure out how I can use them.

How many and in what condition? My take on some of these sites is that the items are hardly used and the prices asked are high.

Another "depending on where you live" suggestion. Our local HO model railroad club has open houses 3-4 times a year. There's always a sale table, the club asks for 10% of the sale price, and they do the selling for you...

NO, I don't want to hear about Ebay. Thanks, Jeff Jeff: A friend of mine was getting out of the hobby and decided to sell off the remaining items in his collection. He bought a table at a good-sized train show (for $15.00) and sold almost everything at close to what he was asking. Good luck with your sale, High Ball, Lee

They've had to get stricter, as the people seem to become stupider. Trust me on that, I've seen 'em...

I had some issues with Facebook, in that they somehow didn't believe I was real. I had to change my name on there to something else, it has caused some questions when my FB name and Paypal name and name for mailing don't match.

By the way, the best place period to sell trains is eBay. Some wont use it which is fine. But in the end it is what it is.

Definitely best in terms of exposure, little doubt of that. If you have a little patience the other methods listed can work well. So basically you have ebay, email lists or face book, and train shows or swap meets. Thats mostly it in a nutshell. Choose your poison.

HO Interchange on Facebook with 860 members .... www.facebook.com/groups/HOInterchange/I see they are now a "secret group" - that's probably why you can't find it. To join, you have to be invited by a current member. Keeps the scammers out. (EDIT) - My apologies - while it still exists in secret form, there hasn't been any activity since July and appears to be inactive since. You can still reply or contact members for items listed, but no new posts are allowed. Mark.

Okay, I'll bite, what's wrong with eBay? Some dont like, having to use pay pal. Others the nonsense of weird buyers. Or lack of feedback for sellers. Or the fees. I dont sell myself. I do have a relative of a friend who is a huge ebayer and knows the ropes. For reaching a large audience and overall selling trains, evay works as good or better than any other method though. YMMV

HOinterchange is dead, gone, kaput, whatever you wish to refer to it as, I was a member so I know the realities of what occurred. Patrick briefly converted it to a secret group as too many were abusing the rules and guidelines, this continued to be a problem along with the headaches of administration so he decided shut it down completely a couple months ago.

YMMV The fees suck, but its better then sitting on the item, lowering your asking price after two weeks, etc. Of you could just do what other people do; Factor in the fees into the item and price accordingly. And as far as Paypal, that keeps honest people honest. There's nothing like having someone say that the MO is in the mail, only to never send it, then magically stop answering emails. All the while, you have been telling other people its sold...... And if they send the MO, they decide to be cheap and send it via standard letter mail, so it gets lost and takes 2 weeks to arrive. Then, you discover that instead of being a Postal Money order like you asked, they send you a personal check from small town bank. So now, you have to wait another two weeks...Then you discover your "customer" can't balance a check book and it gets returned. The entire month, he is is emailing you and wanting to know why you have not shipped yet....... Or, with Paypal, you get your money almost instantly, and can mail out the package the next day. ' And the nonsense of buyers is not only on ebay.

There were two email lists I used for a long time, both ended up moderated by the same guy.
But I left them when the morons on the list started whining because I'd list items posted on eBay (for a tad less) or use eBay for a price guide. They were too dumb to understand that when you bought on the list, you bought on the list, you were not competing with eBay bidders - I'd just pull the item there. Even the moderator couldn't understand it, they did not understand the "Buy or Best Offer" format versus an auction format listing. So I agree on the one who said the people get stupider.
Backshop@ yahoogroups.com is the only one I use now. But I don't sell much on any of them, it's more a place to look for bargains.
Everything I sell goes either on eBay or at a show. Especially if it's over $40 or so, it goes on eBay, virtually no one spends that much at a show. Unless it's say a $200 item for $50.
Which if you have a show anywhere close may be your best bet. Buy a table for $20 or $30 and put it out and whatever doesn't sell by the end of the day, wholesale to a dealer.

You must have gone to higher-class shows than I sold at. People would only pay $2 for any Micro-Trains car, no matter how much it was. AND they wanted a discount off that, so they could put Rapido couplers on them, instead of "those garbage knuckle couplers".

Paypal is an advantage is this area as well, as they will return your money if the seller runs off. Compare that to selling on a board using a MO. If you send a MO to another person, and they DONT ship your product, you will probably be SOL. The local Police and/or postal inspector MIGHT take your report, but thats where it ends. LOL if you think they are going to arrest someone/do an investigation over your $80 MO..
