TIME-CRITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Scale Trains has just agreed to do unnumbered Chessie SD40-2's for the Chessie System Historical Society - IF - we can order a minimum of 48 pieces. They would have to be either all sound or non-sound (would have to order 48 of each to get both versions, can't mix and match). But we need to know by THIS FRIDAY. The 5% off pricing they are currently offering through Friday would apply to your order.

Scale trains is a great company! Try to get Atlas to do that!

^ You spoke a bit too soon as Atlas "did that" within 24 months of their first release of the GP40-2 as a new model.

Unnumbered Phase 1 GP40-2's produced by Atlas exclusively for the CSHS in 2009:

Unique number produced for the CSHS, also in 2009. Atlas did not do any units with 24" reporting marks in their regular production run.

So what is the wire basket found on some Chessie GP40-2's. This is next to the blower housing and behind the electrical cabinet air filter box.

I'd order 1 or 2 but I go here:
THE CHESSIE SYSTEM HISTORICAL SOCIETY New Official Website Preserving the history of the Chessie System Railroads (Baltimore & Ohio, Chesepeake & Ohio and Western Maryland) Last Updated: February 12, 2012
And can order nothing. You're not going to get much by Friday without it. Scaletrains.com has nothing either.

That's why Randy is soliciting input here (and I assume elsewhere), because this forum and others like it get more traffic than the CSHS website on any given day. If there's enough interest here, you'll see it there. By the way, I'm not a Chessie modeler, but I did get one of those sweet unnumbered GP40-2s from the CSHS. Very satisfied!

An unnumbered Chessie SD40-2 could be used to make a lot of patched CSX SD40-2s. As a matter of fact, three of the already announced numbered Chessie units (B&O 7600, 7607 and 7615) became CSXT 8242, 8249 and 8257 in Chessie paint scheme. Ciao. RG

I am not a Chessie modeler either but I was sorely tempted by the nice Atlas GP40-2. I did buy one of the CSHS special run Chessie Intermountain covered hoppers a few years back when they ran them.

Many of the SD40-2s later ended up restenciled "leasers" on western RRs.

I would love to see a CSX Heritage repaint in Chessie. Similar to the Norfolk Southern EL unit.

There are some photo's on CarrTracks website of a D&RGW freight train with a Chessie diesel in the power consist. I'm not sure if it was a lease unit or just equalizing mileage.

It doesn't say that. And all this updating is being done by Friday? It doesn't say that. And all this updating is being done by Friday? It doesn't say that exactly, but since Randy pretty much is the CSHS, at least the part who arranges these sorts of custom runs and updates the web store, that's what I got out of it.

I guess we disagree. He doesn't say that nor does he even ask people to email him if interested. It's an announcement only and he never came back to clear things up. It doesn't say that. Their web site appears abandoned.
They have a facebook page with more recent news, including this.
It says he is receiving emails so I surmise somehow members know his email.
If people outside the group are interested it appears a less visible path.

First chance I've had to jump on here tonight.
Website is "stale" but steps are being undertaken to change that, plenty of discussion among the BOD in the past two weeks. The 2012 date is inaccurate and I don't know why it shows as such. I have personally provided updates in recent months that have been posted.
Have orders for about 24/48 sound units thus far. Will pull the trigger if we get to 36/48. Can't do it without buyers.
Ryan H. is correct that I am pretty much a "one-man band" as far as soliciting manufacturers for stuff like this. I thank him for chiming in in my absence and for his support of past projects.
Society email is ChessieStore at Gmail
Units will come without the B&O sublettering to make things easier for the "well intentioned but misguided" individuals who model the post-1986 transition era. :-P
Any other questions just ask or email, thanks!

We're getting closer, 29 orders. Just need a couple people to push us to 36. Thanks!
