Is it time for a mass produced NW5? Great Northern #186 working the "Hutch" line. This is a modernized version with full length handrails and the removal of the steam generator. This wears the GN full scheme with Empire Builder lettering. Well you do know that the sure fire way to get one produced is to put a lot of time and effort into kit bashing or scratch building one, then as soon as you are finished, someone will announce it!

I'm a modern era guy, but would cave on these in a heartbeat to put a Hutch line up as my 3rd deck....even better in O scale, but OK in HO as well Dave Burman modeling the modern Twin Cities....but willing to flex a bit for an NW-5 Trempealeau, Wi

Really wish someone would do one, but with only three major RR schemes, and only 13 total sold, I wouldn't hold my breath on the NW-5 or the older NW-3. Don't think I will be selling my Overland one anytime soon. Bill

Back when OMI was gonna make these, I reserved two: a "classic" late GN and a BN.
If these became ever so much more affordable, I'd certainly feel compelled to add an as-delivered GN and a Blue GN.
A Southern one would be quite tempting, also.

I also reserved an OMI NW5 to go with my "Hutch" caboose. Unfortunately, with the demise of that project the caboose is still languishing in the display case and I have zero intention of scratch building the 186 to go with it. It seems to me that if Athearn Genesis can do an SDP45, then it shouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility to do the NW5. I would certainly buy the 186 version circa 1968 or 1969 and seriously consider a simplified orange and green or a Big Sky Blue version.

Maybe they could produce two models: the NW5 and the similar RS1325, although I suspect the RS1325 is a little shorter and would need a different frame. But they did wear at least three different paint schemes for two owners.

how about a shot or 2 of the NW3s for those that live an even more of hermit existence ? GN should have just stuck to RS-1s. Spikre

how about a shot or 2 of the NW3s for those that live an even more of hermit existence ? Note that I deleted a superfluous sentence! The thing about NW3's is that they were sorta ungainly/ugly. To me. Still love 'em, though. But what that means is that, because I think the NW5's are so attractive/cute, they should be painted in FULL GN colors. Ideally. While the NW3's, being NOT attractive/cute, look better in less "fancy" paint schemes. And highly weathered helps. That said, one of my favorite NW3 photos (obviously not related to my Pacific Northwestern tendencies): I can't bring in a photo of a GN NW3 in the "proper" scheme, so I'll show Larry Bischoff's model shot: Ed

I can't bring in a photo of a GN NW3 in the "proper" scheme, Ed THE proper scheme and still has its steam generator as evidenced by the stack on the cab roof.

Spikre,
Uh, nothing. I love 'em, and have a couple of Atlas ones. They have a very railroady look about them, especially 'cause of the roof overhang. I wouldn't object if Atlas re-did the handrails, though. Mine scale upwards towards 3" OD--just a tad oversize. And that's without measuring across the white paint.
BUT.
I want NW5's.
