I personally prefer prototype modeling. I've seen enough fantasy modeling in the magazines to see which is plausible and what is just unrealistic.
What is interesting with the emphasis by manufacturers and modelers on highly detailed and accurate models, you still have some that like the figment of the imagination modeling. To each his or her own, I guess.

I pretty much agree with you Jim. Fanatasy modeling isn't my bag either although there are some exceptions which have been well done, like Mike Confalone's Alagash railroad. model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/15291I'm not sure if I have the term proto-lance right but Rob Spangler has done a fantastic job of capturing the Western Pacific on the east end.

The difference between fact and fiction is fiction has to be believable.

At the end of the day the hobby is supposed to be fun. Do what you want and have fun.

Back in the 1980s, there was a railroad that will remain nameless, that had the reputation of grabbing any foreign locomotive that came onto their property, and using it until it was nearly out of fuel, then sending it back home. It made for some interesting foreign power lashups. Somehow I knew who you were referring to! One of the reasons I model that road, in the late 80s! Although I've only got as far as Conrail foreign power so far.
