Update on the Wheels of Time F-70-43 flat cars. Starting around March 20 or so, WOT began shipping their second run. This run includes: - 12 numbers of Cotton Belt bulkhead flats (as delivered) - 12 numbers of Cotton Belt plain flat cars (as-delivered). - 12 more numbers of SP bulkhead flat cars (numbers from the GBEC 2nd production order). The SP look the same as the original run but "as-produced" - no ACI plate. - 6 numbers of KCS black "look alike" plain flat cars - 6 numbers of CP red "look alike" plain flat cars There are no SP plain flat cars this time around; all of those from the first run are sold out unless you can find a vendor with a few. I ordered a 3 pack of the Cotton Belt bulkheads and a couple more SP bulkheads and a Cotton Belt flat car. Nice to see the second run with new paint schemes. My six cars arrived yesterday - the Cotton Belt cars are a nice addition and extra SP cars welcome. According to Railgoat's website on the F-70-43 flat cars these represent, the following data is presented: SP 509000-509124 57'-0" bulkheads job # 14197 SP 509125-509324 57'-0" bulkheads job # 14828 SP 580500-580614 62'-0" plain job # 14196 SP 580615-580624 62'-0" (possibly diverted ?) SP 599170-599179 62'-0" (possibly diverted ?) SSW 85650-85774 62'-0" plain job # 14196 SSW 86500-86624 57'-0" bulkheads job # 14197 SSW 87100-87110 57'-0" (probably re#'d from above at some point) Golden West numbers: GVSR 443000-443048 In summeary the totals appear to be: SP had 325 GBEC bulkhead flat cars [125 (first order) and 200 (second order)] SP had 115 GBEC plain flat cars SSW had 125 GBEC bulkhead flat cars SSW had 125 GBEC plain flat cars Cheers, Jim Fitch

I just ordered two of the Golden West Service cars from Klein's (they're doing a 5% off Spring sale). Looking forward to seeing these, as they'll be my first examples of this model. I have a weakness for SP and GWS cars, and I can justify that I need some for the lumber yards on my future layout! I'd go for an SP or SSW car when they offer a later repaint scheme, or one with lube stencils.

No idea if WOT will offer them with the lube stencils are not, but those would be easy enough to add. I'm hoping WOT will next offer the F-70-50 - similar but the different bulkheads.

How often do you suppose these made it out east? Damn good looking model but I have no idea if they ever ran on PC or B&O rails.

Edit: found the link. Someone at TO posted a photo of an SP flat car same as WOT model in Florida: www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,4042330,4042662#msg-4042662 I was browsing for photo's and found one of a plain SP flat car with lumber load in New Jersey. So it appears wherever lumber was needed, these cars went; I imagine the lumber originated in the Pacific northwest.

The CP cars are "look-alike cousins," as WoT describes them, but here's one of the prototype they're meant to represent in 2011: CP 315071: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2716646Jim, I could certainly add the lube stencils, but when it's a car that I really don't "need," and it's outside of my immediate modeling focus, I try to lint the work I have to do so I can concentrate on the projects I need to finish. I.e. if the model's mostly ready to go out of the box, I'll come up with an excuse to buy it even though it doesn't fit my modeling focus. Dave

Dave,
I have an endless to-do list myself - I understand. Its a hobby not a full time job. Your call of course.
I checked the photo of the CP red flat car in the link and the WOT version is pretty close - I think off by one stake pocket if I counted correctly. WOT does call the CP cars "look alike cousins" to flat cars apparently built by Gunderson for CP in 1967.

Just to clarify, the CP look-alikes are intended to represent cars built for CP by Napanee Industries in 1967. These are action red repaints since the cars were originally delivered in black with Canadian Pacific spelled out in white block letters. The red cars appear to still be in service and online pictures suggest some of the cars were never repainted and are still found in the black delivery scheme. As mentioned in the original thread on the second run of WOT flats, the model has one stake pocket too many and they are of a slightly different shape. Also, I believe the truck bolsters are closer to the end of the car on the prototype compared to the model (and the trucks are not a match). There are likely other detail differences but overall it has the right look and feel. You can do a good comparison here: canadianfreightcargallery.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cp315025&o=cprail www.wheelsotime.com/picture/cp-w.jpg?pictureId=21408632 Also note the model is lacking the black "Plate C" stencil and six reflective white diamonds on each side but these can be added. That said, I'm enjoying the model I received from WOT a few weeks ago and can live with these compromises. A nice touch is that WOT correctly flipped the lettering on either side of the car so that the "CP Rail" is always at the B-end of the car just as it appears in photos. The car adds some needed variety to my fleet and thanks to WOT for offering the scheme even if it isn't a perfect match.

The builder and build date are both mentioned on WOT website, but all the other info in interesting and informative! Thanks! I could see the stake pocket count difference and you confirmed my suspicions about the truck positions; the truck positions relative to the sill slopes is visible although to super clear in the photo comparisons. BTW,at what date(s) were these flat cars repaintef into red?

How often do you suppose these made it out east? Damn good looking model but I have no idea if they ever ran on PC or B&O rails. Roadkill... I'm sure they did. I've got a few of them in EL trains back in that era... SP 509303 was found in train BRC-98 on 10/28/75 consigned to Hunter Lumber in Annandale, NJ, via the CNJ at Lake Jct. and SSW 86543 was found in train NY-97 on 6/10/75 going back empty to the Milwaukee Road in Chicago. If they were in EL trains going to customers in the northeast, you can bet some of them showed up on the PC and B&O. -pat

I have seen photos of them as far east as Long Island right through the mid 1980s.

I picked up one of the SSW bulkhead versions...This is a beautiful car. Would love to see more runs of the ExactRail Centerbeam and a bulkhead version of their GSC cars. Tangent's bulkhead version would be NICE too!

I grabbed one SP and one Cotton Belt at the OKC show this past weekend. They're awesome. I'll definitely be getting some of the next run.
