Any update on this model? Tooling for the roofs, end ladders and doors were modified, we will get decorated samples in June and if all goes well, cars should be here in December.

Thanks for the new information! On a related note... any update on the NSC 5092 combo-box?

Thanks for the new information! On a related note... any update on the NSC 5092 combo-box? The NSC 5092 is getting a few tooling mods (ends, doors) and I'm awaiting new sample parts (no date for new tooling yet).

Will these cars be available somewhere other than Pacific Western Rail Services?
I had bad experiences dealing with PWRS and their high pressure sales tactics in the past, years ago. If the cars are available through more "normal" channels, maybe I'd buy some, since I love Railboxes.

If the cars are available through more "normal" channels, maybe I'd buy some, since I love Railboxes. PWRS is the only guaranteed source of the NARC cars, but I've also picked up a bunch of them on ebay and through dealers at train shows. In my experience, and that of others posting in similar threads (and earlier in this one), the aggressive telephone sales tactics used by PWRS fell by the wayside several years ago. Also, I believe it was mentioned earlier in the thread that by calling PWRS directly, these cars can be ordered from PWRS without enrolling in their PORTERS system. Going the PORTERS route is a bit of a hassle and requires a 15-minute phone call to get it set up; but once set up their system is a convenient way to manage and track pre-orders plus save on combined shipping when pre-ordered items arrive at random times.

That is what I have heard too, but it's a tactic that seems to have left a very bad and long lasting taste in the mouths of hobbyists. Thankfully, I haven't needed to deal with PWRS so far. I might pick up a couple of these cars eventually if I can find them at a train show or on eBay.

They don't do that stuff anymore AFAIK...the high pressure sales calls...that is.
In regards to the complaints regarding the tooling of the cars...it's a valid point to take into consideration when price point is concerned. Take a look at a new Moloco RBL...just for comparison. They are absolutely fabulous. If there is such a thing as a $50 box car; it's a Moloco.
NARC could certainly refine the tooling on these for a second look...but I'm going to wait and see what comes about from the production samples Darrel gets back.
Coal hoppers have a high enough bar to compete with based on ExactRail 3737's; Arrowhead H39's; and Tangent UP Beth Quads to say the least...the same holds true for boxcars, IMO.

I'm more worried about the catch-all paint jobs on the CSX cars than the tooling. (Opinion unchanged after 6 months)

I'm hopeful that if NARC/PWRS are going to the trouble of retooling parts of the cars that they've also listened to the criticism of the paint jobs and will address that too.
I was going to cancel my order but now I'm waiting for the next round of samples.

I'm with Tom on the what you get for the money notion. These box cars appear to be priced at $41.95 per car, which is up there in the "should be pretty accurate" price range. In that price point, many customers are going to have fairly high expectations, just like with the Genesis 4600 hoppers - dimensional accuracy, fit and finish and paint schemes are going to be held to a fairly high standard so if retooling and revising is necessary, it should be done. Of course that does add to development costs but that's where getting it right early on is important, but better late than never. The website lists these as 40% pre-sold.
Only a few of them fall in my modeling period and are of interest to me - mainly the PC, Railbox and maybe C&NW, assuming they turn out pretty good.

Saw the PS 5077 has a delivery date now of January 2020. Was previously this month. Would be nice to see new samples or get an update on the model.
