Do any manufacturers make short passenger cars? I'm able to run standards size cars on my layout, but it would look better if I could run shorter cars. I know that there are some for the 1800s, but I'm running 1959. I'd like to find something in the 50 foot range. I've also given some thought to doing some cutting on a standard car, but I've never done this, and I'm not sure of what issues I'd encounter such as tracking. Any advice would be appreciated.

Mantua streamlined passenger cars were about 50-60 feet. You can find both those and the Life Like cars at swap meets. Of course, a swap meet where you are might be a long drive.... There's always Ebay.

I have an idea, if you decide you like these shorty cars. We are beginning train show season, and those of us that have them nearby can keep an eye out for them. New in box for less than, say, ten buck, grab them and mail them to you, and you send a check back. The downside to this is you may end up with 20 of them in one weekend...

Doug I might have some of the Harriman cars that were 60' length and they do look nice. Have you given a thought to those? Larry

Doug, Larry is correct about those MDC/Roundhouse Harriman cars and some possibly made by others. I have a few of the Harriman cars, but they're waiting for paint/decals and time to work on them. In addition, if you can find any of the Walthers/(Rivarossi) 60' passenger cars or 4 car sets, those would work well for you, too. I say that, as I have the GN, 4 car set from several years ago. I like them and they work well on my predominantly 18"r curves.
