I have done some google research this week and apparently the ideal brake retainer valve part to get is PSC 31796. I have checked with my parts dealer as well as ebay and it seems this part is not readily available. Someone on shapeways is selling 3D printed versions which could work. I also read someplace that Tichy makes this part. Does anyone have a Tichy part # or other recommendations? Part is to the left of the brake wheel shown here:

Thank you. Great discussion at that link. I did consider the Tichy set but I do not need the other parts. I am hoping to be able to buy about 10-15 of just the retainer valve (3-4 packs of the PSC part would be more suitable than all those Tichy 3013s).

Minimum order from PSC is $20.00. Plastic version is as you said. Part #31796 and comes in a package of four. My catalog is a few years old. The price says $2.00 per pack, so you will have to buy 10 packs. The brass part number is 3263 and comes two to a pack for $2.50.

The Shapeways seller is a friend, and at my request he tried selling the retainers without air hoses, but couldn't get them to pass the design. So I'm with you, snagging all the PSC packs I can find.

Thank you Brian and Adam for the replies. My dealer has a large unfulfilled order in with PSC who has not yet responded to the email I sent earlier this week. Nothing on ebay. In the meantime, I have raided my sprue box and old Tichy 3013s and scrounged various styles of these parts. The Tichy brake sprue is always an option as Graham points out. Lots of goodies on that set.

I ordered some brass parts direct from PSC a few years ago and other than waiting a month for them it was as smooth as anything else.

From the current text on the front page of their website, they were sold in May and were expecting to be "back up and running" in June 2018.

Sometimes I can score these unusual detail parts at places like Perry's Hobbies in Minnesota or at PF&S in Pasco WA. PF&S came up with two much-needed cases of Atlas 83 flex during the flex track drought several years ago.

Just a quick off-topic update, I emailed PSC on the weekend to inquire if they were working with CDN distributors and I received an affirmative reply within two days -- from none other than Teresa Prantle, whom I believe to be of eBay fame, likely familiar to many here (j-prantle?).

That would be very welcome news indeed.
I order from the Prantles at least once a week.
Maybe they can be convinced to take over Detail Associates next!

Remember that PSC has recently been sold and the new owners are in a different state (Pasco Washington) may not have all the parts in the stock from the sale so may take some time. They did indicate they will be selling direct but the prices, minimums etc., had not yet been announced. The new PSC website did not have any product store to order from yet. The new buyers used to do business via eBay. You can e-mail them to see if the parts you want are now available.
It may turn out to be less expensive to order Tichy parts in bulk. I notice that Westerfield uses Tichy brake parts for AB brakes in their new resin kits.

Update: I have obtained the newly-released 40-pack of retainer valves from the Shapeways seller as well as the plastic PSC 31796 (pack of 4). The latter cost $6.50CDN plus tax and shipping, so I suspect the shapeways option may be cheaper if placing another order at the same time. Both parts are very well done.

Not my photo, just a link to one posted elsewhere so that I could point out what my desired part was. The idea was to avoid the: "That's not my era, what's a retainer valve?!" type questions.
