Guys the default horn from Intermountain Dual single chimes selection 14. Is this correct or should I be using a different horn selection. I also messed up guess this is a passenger loco I have been using it for freight, o well I have it now. I fell in love with that old green/yellow/black paint scheme Thanks .Steve

Isn't the horn on the roof a Holden M3, or something similar?

The Nathan M3H 3-chime horn is what you're looking for. It was CN & CP's horn of choice on new locos for much of the 50's and 60's.

Unfortunately that information is incorrect. While bell orientation may have changed (easily done on both M3H and K3L horns, you just unbolt and reverse the bell/power chambers on the manifold), there was no mass-scale M3H to K3L horn swapping going on. Over time, newer K3L's did start to show up on CN F-units as horns got swapped out if defective, but there are many photos online of CN and ex-CN FP9's and FPA4's with M3H's in the VIA era. As always, it's best to consult prototype photos of the unit in the era in question to be sure.

We really should update it with more accurate info. A very large number of F units did have their M3s changed to K3s in the 1970s. In the 1980s, M3s were very rare on VIA. -Jason

In fact I'd say it was about 50-50 M3H and K3L by then, based on all the VIA FP9 and FPA4 photos I've looked through. M3H's are rather easy to spot as they had a have a noticeable protruding tab at the bottom of each back cap where they bolted together (K-series didn't have this) and had different-sized diameter bells/back caps (the K-series had them all the same size), as well as an angled casting stamped into at the back of each back cap (and the back caps on the M's were "fatter" looking than on the K horns). This sampling of VIA units all have M3H's: www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=12497www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=11966www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=21509www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=20535www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=14239www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=17926Of course, all the new power such as LRC's and F40's all came with K3's, but the M's could still be found on the ol' F's and RDC's.
