No. All the usual Dash 2 vs. non-Dash 2 spotting features apply.

No. All the usual Dash 2 vs. non-Dash 2 spotting features apply. As well as trucks, frame length and most, not all, short hoods. Two different locomotives.

I was thinking of using the Scaletrains SD40-2 drive and walkways, Kato long hood and a Shapeways 3D printed cab. I wanted to use an Athearn SD38 long hood but since they are different Kato it is.

Why not just use the Kato SD38-2? The version I want build has the SD40-2 tracks also the Scaltrains drive will save me a lot of work, it comes with nicer walkway and proper pilots as well as all the under frame detail for about the same price as Kato.

Word of caution, that's a GMD SD38-2. For the proper frame/steps, etc you may want to use the Bowser SD40-2 chassis. It's similar to the Scale Trains chassis and set up (fiber optics, no wires attach to the shell, similar detail, etc. ) You may also be able to use the Bowser nose and cab since they're also Canadian and have done the correct profiles for CN (*and CP) SDs. Then maybe splice in the Kato SD38-2 long hood and go from there.

I'm looking at Genesis GP40-2WL steps which I have in my parts box and the cab I'm still researching but I'm leaning towards Shapeways.

20 years ago, most people who "needed" SD38's or SD38-2's were modeling the greater Chicago or Great Lakes area. If you weren't, then you were most likely a Conrail hump yard modeler. I gather that no longer holds true...did or does CN ever run theirs down near the Gulf?

Pre-2009, CN only had 4 SD38-2s that they inherited from the Northern Alberta Railway, and AFAIK they never leave the hump yards in Canada. CN also has a small fleet of SD38-2s inherited from the EJ&E, DMIR and B&LE, some of which do occasionally stray from the Midwest.

I figured most people who bought the Athearn units did so just because it’s a cool little line with a nice paint scheme. Actually I wouldn’t mind to have one, come to think of it. Bessemer certainly qualifies as greater Great Lakes region, doesn’t it? Lol. The L&N, and later CSX, kept theirs around Birmingham for the most part. More steel production. These things seemed to congregate around steel mills.

Athearn did three runs of the entire roster of McCloud SD38's. There are none in stock at Athearn today. I was additionally inspired to get mine because BN leased them.

Anyone know what size is the fuel tank on the CN version? Looks like there is a big gap between the front truck and fuel tank.

CN- NAR SD38-2 had 3200 gallon tank, instead of a 4000 gallon tank, very much like milw Sd40-2, EMD offered various sizes of fuel tanks, have to look at the protype, from 2400 to 4000. Hope this helps
