At the West Springfield, MA, show Saturday, January 26 Rapido Trains had an announcement posted about these, showing the different types and paint schemes that will be produced. No copies were available for handing out. Three different cars will be made: 941-H (earliest) with 100-ton trucks, 3-panel body; 963-H (intermediate); with 125-ton trucks, 3-panel body with horizontal ribs and large hatches; 996-H (later version) similar to 963-H but with 6-panel body. All will be available in as-delivered New York Central paint and lettering (4 car numbers each), plus other schemes. Prices TBA, delivery 2020. Official announcement should be forthcoming soon.
Someone at the show asked what they carried. I believe all NYC cars, which became PC and later Conrail one, carried cement. I am almost certain some came from big plant uphill from the river at Hudson, NY, and others from a plant on a NYC ex-West Shore trackage near Schenectady. I believe they went only to on-line unloading facilities; the one I'm quite familiar with was in downtown Framingham, Massachusetts, just west of the main building of the old stone passenger station, which still stands. Had probably about a dozen cars there or nearby routinely, created a lot of dust. Gone for years now, with much of the site occupied by new MBTA Commuter Rail station (used by Amtrak only for the Lake Shore Limited).

It looks like the ones with MDTX reporting marks wandered a bit farther afield. I expect I'll get one of those.

The new notice posted at the show actually showed the paint schemes of each type to be done. A knowledgeable friend at the show mentioned the 38" wheels; I should have added that earlier.

If the models are half as cool as the drawings, we are definitely in for a treat! And though it's likely that these cars will be awesome, I am going to follow in the footsteps of tankcarsrule, and eventually rebuild the three AHM versions that, by coincidence, found their way into my modeling stash shortly after his photo log posted here, and other places, a few years ago. Does anyone have know what the cost will be?

Donnell I have no inside info, but given that the Rapido 3800 cu. ft. Cylindrical Hopper went for $49.95 (US) a pop, and $289.95 (US) for a 6-pack in 2017, I'm ready for at least that much, and possibly more as the Flexo-Flo may present even more detail challenges.

Weren't there some problems with the 3800's?

I would be amazed if these were less then $59. Agreed. They are pretty cool. I wonder if any wandered west to the Rockies.

One of the MDTX photos I saw was shot in Georgia. So they clearly got out of the northeast. For my purposes, I'm going to believe one or two got out west. Maybe to see Hollywood.

Since that earlier topic, I picked up an ECW kit for Buckeye 125 ton trucks. The sideframes looked correct, but way too thin. I corrected that, and they look pretty good. I added NWSL 38" wheels.
Very presentable, really. And putting them next to 100 ton trucks really shows a dramatic difference.
Anyway, I'd prefer not to repeat the process, and look forward to a source of this kind of truck.

Ed To bring that "special/secret" cement out to California. I am in the same boat as you on this, searching for an excuse for one. Maybe special cement for those special bricks from Georgia that came in the Mask Island Southern brick car that has no business being in my roster. Jim

They are pretty cool. I wonder if any wandered west to the Rockies. I've seen pics of them on the Western Pacific. No reason to think they didn't get there via the D&RGW.

That it then since WP and D&RGW handed off freight trains to each other during my modeling era. That's the thing about the bridge route, more often than not, freight cars from all over the place were seen at one time or another.

I had no clue they made it until 2007, or the 2000s at all.

Good to know! I'm not surprised -- it seems almost axiomatic that freight rollingstock will ultimately appear almost anywhere. I was watching a video of a train going thru either Idaho or Montana, and what appears but a New York Central vermillion red and grey Pacemaker boxcar in the consist. I think it was one of the Hank Griffith films put out by Pentrex back some years. The Pacemaker boxcars were designed by New York Central for online less-than-carload service. But when that business went elsewhere, load limit and capacity data were added to the boxcars and they did go offline.

I imagine there are a number of examples where cars thought to be in a limited routing ended up elsewhere.
I was at a train show watching a guy running a long ice PFE reefer train and he had a couple of BAR "red potato" cars mixed in. He informed me that during the off-season BAR would lease surplus red potato wood sided reefers to be used in PFE service.

I've always liked that paint scheme.

I checked Rapido's website but didn't see any other information than the coming soon flyer. It would be interesting to know which paint schemes are being offered.

It would be very wise of Rapido to offer some of the "far rangers", so that people who don't model NYC have an excuse to get one/some. I was thrilled to finally find a picture of one of these in my "neighborhood": Ed

Doesn't surprise me at all, the Bangor & Aroostook did the same with some of their diesels too during the off season, primarily to the Pennsy and later PC.
