Hi all,
Janet, Dan and I recently visited Dave Abeles's beautiful Conrail layout. We've made a video of it, and it includes a cameo from the one and only Tony Koester.
If you don't like our silly videos, don't watch. This is one of our more ridiculous ones. There is one guy who hates all our videos but watches all of them on day one and then leaves negative comments. He even managed to trash us in the Mike McGrattan memorial video. You gotta wonder who keeps running over this guy's cat....
Anyway, here it is:
Thanks for watching,
Jason

Seems like Janet picked up a bit of knowledge in the office!

Why Aye! Just head east and come down into the US near Water Town and down though Syracuse on 81 (Destiny USA) and south of town eh? I have passed through the area modeled and Dave's layout is spot on. He's maybe just past the worst of the Lake Effect snow that drives people with Seasonal Affective Disorder over-the-edge! (why I very happy to move south to Virginia! Jason, you are a stitch!

So is that a production sample B36-7 tucked in that freight consist? I do think Janet might the brains of that operation. Another nicely done video. Thanks Jason for the entertainment.

This is one of our more ridiculous ones. I watched the whole thing and didn't see ANYTHING ridiculous. Well, maybe: youse guys wandered WAY too far from your transport, considering you were unarmed. Didn't leave a sentry, neither. You're lucky that humanoid wasn't more observant and carrying a flyswatter! Ed

Your videos crack me up and still provide a ton of insight and information. Do not change a thing, some people will never be happy unfortunately.
What you have accomplished during your "short" time as a successful manufacturer is nothing short of brilliant. We wish you all the best with continued success Rapido.
PS... it seems like a lot are requesting Comet IB cars, hopefully in a future production run!

So...was that Charleston, IL...that you guys were standing at on the Nickel Plate? Cayuga, IN. Interchange with the C&EI. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the video. It was a lot of fun to make. Sometimes you just want to shoot a great layout or two. We weren't actually selling anything! -Jason

Very cool.
Love The Third Sub.
The CR Onondaga cutoff is very cool as well.
Janet was very impressive with her knowledge of train and nerd related facts.

Having lived and traveled in the Syracuse area from 1994 through 2009, the Onondaga Cutoff really looks spot on for the area just south of the city!
BTW, is the a miniature version of that big rock on the east side of 81 that had all the writing or graffiti on it included on the layout?
My wife and I watched the video together after I got home from work and enjoyed it. She was very impressed with Dave's layout and realism. She has been with me on many trips up Hwy 81 though the Onondaga nation part of the area just south of Syracuse. Dave has captured what I remember in the area during the CR era in the 90's well.

Isn't hosehead the name of the dog in Strange Brew? That was my initiation into Canadian humor. Eh! There is a mouse in this beer bottle!

Is the Onondaga the same layout that was in MRP a while back? Built in the cellar of a mid-1800s farmhouse?

So, are we going to see an Enterprise LRC? That unit was a fundraiser done by Rapido a few years ago.

These videos are great, silliness and all! They give us a chance to see Rapido products in action and are not a standard review; they're just having fun. If straight forward reviews are what you want, James (a.k.a. jlwii2000) does a great job.
I think the “silliness” is the fact that people would criticize Rapido’s video content when they are simply trying to be whimsical while also being one of the most transparent and accessible train manufacturers on the web.
Thanks, Mark

I love the big dreams and all...like most of us...when we get an open space. The first inclination is to fill every nook and cranny with TRACK. Then, reality sets in...and we are faced with a dilemma...it's a great read...and thanks to this thread...I'll pull that issue off the shelf and take another look.

Having been a "victim" of the 'kid in the candy store' NUMEROUS times...I can certainly relate. But the layout essentially covered all of his main wishes...and is beautifully executed.
I went back and rebuilt my layout room this past January...and would dutifully agree with the conclusions in the article that a layout space must be ready before you commence construction.
I tried to hide the paneling and the old ceiling and poor lighting in my room for years...while trying to cram every bit of track in there I could...but I came to my senses this year.
Now, I'm not giving up my layout with the entire Joppa Subdivision...however, to accomplish that entire sub in a reasonably compressed version; it will take a LARGE basement.
As pretty much a lone wolf operator...I re-evaluated my thinking...decided to focus on one or two towns...and the coal mine branches for now. And, if/when I have a larger space later...I'd actually op to build these areas closer to "scale" and stretch them out...allowing for more prototype-length trains.

Which is why it's taking a good deal of time and money to get my basement finished and ready for a layout!

My wait will be even longer! I've still gotta get the basement. And then there's also the thing on TOP of the basement.
Do have the land, though.

Well, when my wife was looking for a house last time around, the train basement was one of the primary search criteria. It was surprisingly difficult in this area and in our price range, which is why my commute is pretty long; but a guy has to have priorities!

Have a train room in the third floor of my older home...but we aren't ready to sell and buy a new one. Pricing basements is like buying another house...they're essential in tornado alley...and for model railroaders (more importantly)... So, I had the room gutted and insulated; with drywall and new LED lights; New carpet; and will attempt to make up my mind in the next week or so of which area to start with.

I would guess the hot setup in Tornadoland is to have everything of value placed below the flush top of your basement. House blown away? No problem!
I live in Earthquake land. And Fireland, too, now that I think of it. Maybe my basement should be covered with a fireproof floor. House burned down? No problem!

I look at it like a train room/safety room with a house attached.
