I know it's probably not something most members here are interested in, but I thought that I'd post it anyway to take a break from all the new product "feedback". I recently finished up this model of a Harsco/Fairmont rail grinder. It's kit bashed from a Custom Finishing Models kit #7002. I don't model Septa, but while doing the prototype research I was only able to find photos of a couple of Canadian units and this Septa one. The Canadian units were pretty bland compared to the Septa one, so being from the northeast, Septa seemed to be the natural choice.    The bulk of the work went into reworking the cab and the hood to match the prototype. The rest of it was scratch building the tons of little details specific to this unit. The unit has wheels and fits on track, they don't turn. They are insulated though so it can be placed on live track. Decals are custom from PDC.ca. Super! I love to see projects using Custom Finishing MOW thingies.
The highlight for me is the side skirts. They hide a problematic area - the grinding apparatus. The texture and paint are super. (again!) And the final touch is the fringe at the bottom.

Great critter! I may have no interest in or knowledge of SEPTA, but that is great modeling and a good inspiration to get off the computer and go build something!
It just looks right all around.

In a brief moment of insanity I had considered modeling it with the skirts up. The fabric on the skirts was a bit of a challenge as well. After a few unsuccessful tries with other materials I ended up using gray ribbon from the craft store. It was impossible to cut straight off the roll so I ended up soaking it in glosscoat to form a kinda sheet like material which I was able to cut into little pieces. A quick pass with a lacquer thinner brought back the fabric surface which was then able to be weathered. Absolutely amazing! You got me with those screened windows! Hasegawa modeling mesh. It comes in different sizes (this is the smallest, 0.32mm) and shapes, best product out there. Way better than the stuff directed at the model railroad market. |

Your weathering has always been very good but it seems like you've leveled up with this model. The subtleties in the base color, the fading and streaking near the logo and the rust/dust along the undercarriage is just spectacular. And the build itself is outstanding. Thanks for the tip on the screen, by the way.

Not to pile on again, but to add to what Ryan said, I've always enjoyed looking at what you see in terms of detail to add. My favorite part of this model and your work in general is the gradual nature of the product. You wrap up the finish very well, among some of the best I've seen actually. No stark contrast of unwanted plastic, or smudges, or heavy brushed applicants. A great inspiration to say the least, hope you have more to show as the year goes on!

Again, I can't thank you guys enough, it means a lot.
But I agree 100%, this is by far the best piece I've done so far. I've been guilty in the past of models that are always too uniform looking and lacking depth, but I have been reading and watching about a lot of different techniques used by the military guys, and this was the first model that I've done from scratch that I was able to incorporate them all. I mean I learned how to properly paint a rusty exhaust finally and it starts with white, who knew.

What are your favorite military techniques that you've come across? I'd be interested to take a look at them. My favorite so far have been pre-shading/post shading and what I guess you can call it the lighting effect. Pre shading is basically airbrushing all the panel lines and seams with a dark color, usually black, right after priming but before the main base color is applied. The final color is applied in an uneven light coat leaving the lines "shadowed". It's very big with aviation modelers. Post shading is just the opposite, you go in with a dark color after the final color and hit all the shadow areas. Obviously pre shading is much more forgiving as you can always cover up mistakes with the base color, whereas if you mess up the post, it's hard to fix. There are tons of videos on youtube on both. Lighting is kinda hard to describe but its basically using lighter shades of the base color on different surfaces to create the illusion of depth. It is described very well in this video. The entire Vallejo video series is excellent. I've learned quite a bit from the series, even some things I've been doing wrong. Obviously it highlights their own products but the techniques are all the same. Honestly at this point I'm using almost all non railroad paints. All my stuff is AK Interactive, MIG, Vallejo, and Tamiya. I use TCP for anything railroad color specific otherwise I've pretty much abandoned testors, floquil and all that inferior stuff. I can't tell you the last time I used a rattle can. I also enjoy watching a channel called Night Shift Models on youtube: www.youtube.com/c/NightShiftScaleModelsHe only does tanks and stuff but its a great channel to learn from, and his work is amazing. A lot of techniques apply to trains and the rest you can skip. He even does some incredible scenery work for his dioramas. |
