OK I'll go ahead and get things started this week with an Atlas GP38-2 from the vault. I purchased this as a started kitbash from a great modeller in WPG years ago and I finished it a short time later. CP Rail had a large fleet of these units (3021-3135) built in the mid-1980s and many of them are still being maintained and operated today. This model is circa-1989 when 3111 was fairly new and being used in prairie branchline service. A few years later in 1995 it would be repainted into the dual flags scheme and placed into captive eastern Iron Highway service along with 3024, 3025, 3038, 3057 and 3072 (same 3 pairs of units assigned in the early years of the service).

Nice Canadian bash indeed. Between the nose work, stanchions, and step/pilot areas, it's not small endeavor. I took some better photos of my G43 out in natural light which really brings out some shading that I was pretty happy with. The next one will be more refined now that I can visually see what I did and didn't do with the washes. I have been working the insides this morning to dull the sheen.

Good afternoon from sunny and cool Northeast Ohio! Here is what I got done this week: First up, another modified Athearn 2 bay ribbed hopper with Pikestuff Panels added, then painted with Scalecoat II Black Paint and lettered with Mark Vaughn's Wabash decals. The Wabash converted a lot of their USRA hoppers with new panel sides and then build new higher capacity cars as time went on, this is one of the new cars and was used in coal mines in southern Illinois. Cars were done with different sizes of the word Wabash, this is one of the earlier smaller lettering. Next a Branchline 50' ARR Boxcar kit with A-Line sill steps to replicate the PRR class X44 boxcars. Car was painted with Scalecoat II PRR freight car red paint and lettered with Greg Komars decals. This car was in auto parts service to various Ford assembly plants from the parts supplier plant. The start of another Tangent 86' Hi-Cube boxcar kit! Some Wabash Power, a GP35, C424 (B Unit) and U25B on a general freight running on the Strongsville Club layout. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

Got this one finished to do the clinic for the Carolinas RPM. Scratchbuilt sides from styrene with Genesis Hydro Cushion under frame, Cannon Ends, Moloco trucks, Shapeways printed roof by Ian Clasper. Door is a modified Kadee wide 10ft Youngstown. Dedicated to Hubert Mask as this is the last decal set I got from him. Painted with Testors Beret Green and Floquil silver.

In the memory of Allen McClelland and his wonderful V&O railroad I am posting the following: I devoured his original series on his railroad in RMC. When he formed the V&O Historical Society I quickly joined and that included a nice newsletter about the V&O and updates. The best thing was that once a year he had an open house just for members of the V&OHS. It was great and even better I was able to run a couple of trains. Great stuff! As many people have already said Allen was a great host and I am still thankful for him in opening his his basement for a small group of V&O fans. His railroad seemed like it could have existed and a V&O boxcar does not look incongruous at all in one of my Penn Central freights. The car itself is a special run Accurail car that I made a couple of modifications to....mainly removal of the running board and new stirrups.

Nice Canadian bash indeed. Between the nose work, stanchions, and step/pilot areas, it's not small endeavor. Thank you for commenting on my model! These modern CP GMD units are indeed a major undertaking. In addition to what you have said, the side sill, roof and truck side frames all had to be substantially modified plus all the usual detailing.
Your gondola looks amazing esp the weathering and the attention to detail including coupler trip pin removal and addition of uncoupling levers and air hose detail. Well done.

I weathered this DRGW boxcar in between chipping away at the MP hopper from last week and making a load for an Exactrail centerbeam. It’s not sealed yet because it’s been storming all weekend in this part of Florida. I do wanna take better photos of it at some point.

Looks VERY sharp! IIRC these units had the newer style blower duct found mostly on GP60’s (4 axles wise). Unusual on a 38-2. What type horn?

Thanks and you are correct about the duct, here's the other side. Horn is K3H.

Nice and thanks. I’m trying to remember if the CP units were the only 38-2’s with that style duct. I don’t recall seeing them on anyone else’s units.

Thanks and you are correct about the duct, here's the other side. Horn is K3H. *K3LR2 The K3L and the K3LR2 are the same horn, just depends if the one chime is reversed or not. On CP it usually is. On CN it usually isn't. The K3H is a different horn, it plays a different note than the K3L does. CN has a bunch of them on their units. They usually have all three chimes facing ahead in typical CN fashion.

Moved into new place and been working on models on days off. Trying to get as much done at once so i can bring them all to paint booth for primer at same time. Scaletrains operator sd40-2 that i got years ago and had started the conversion process to sd40e3. Finally used the dremel to make room for the recessed brake wheel on long hood. Will be getting new speaker enclosure so im not worried about the factory one that is now hacked. 20221029_181851 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr I will be building a new cab for it. Factory cab is just sitting in its place. 20221029_181900 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr CSX SD45-2 8886 Not much to do to this one other than update some details from when it was painted in conrail from athearn. 20221030_200918 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr NJ Transit 4101 in progress. This particular athearn one is nothing but a pita! They used some kind of glue that i've never experienced on any other athearn model. Handrails pressed into small holes on sill making removal impossible. All of them broke. Lots of excess glue in places that it shouldn't be. Doing the best i can to clean the model up. Already kitbashed the dynamic brake housing to look prototypical to the gp40ph-2's. Built the HEP door panel long hood pieces last night. Need to do some finally shaping of the flared hep shell piece to mount the door sides. 20221101_115233 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr Will do some frame modifications to allow the hep shell pieces to sit properly at the rear and strip the gold off. New sidesframes will be built this weekend. 20221101_123540 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr
