In keeping with the Bowser CP SD40-2 theme following their recent announcement of another run, I am pleased to offer up these photos of the two Locotrol II receiver units they produced in their 2017 run. These models of 1985-production GMD SD40-2s are highly accurate for the 1991-2000 timeframe when the prototypes had blanked-over windows, no classlights and no ditchlights. These were usually paired up with other units from the western mountain pool which were typically filthy with coal dust and other grime from the hard service they provided. Many of these units, referred to by various names including receivers, slaves, scuds, B-units, radio units or robots would later be returned to leader status following the end of Locotrol II SD40-2 operations in 1998. A couple of these modern production SD40-2s survive on CP today, typically on ballast and other company service trains. Bowser plans to release 5867 and 5873 (also from CP's class of '85) in their post-Y2K configuration by 2024.

I actually chased the 6062 on a grain train back in 2019: That encounter inspired me to build a model of it, which took a bit of brainstorming how I would actually do it. One way would have been to buy one of the Bowser 6062s, but then I'd need a second unit (one of the '84 built units Bowser made, specifically), to swap over the ditchlight-equipped sill, the clear cab windows, etc. What I ended up doing was skipping a step and taking the cheaper route: I bought an '84 unit (I think it was 6054?) and just changed everything that needed changing. I removed the class lights, added the Locotrol antennas on the roof and removed the battery box doors and replaced them with Cannon parts. The unit is currently sitting on my shelf awaiting an electronics upgrade with DCC, Sound, and new LEDs.

Good afternoon from cold and snowy Northeast Ohio! Here is this weeks output. Another Athearn Ribbed Side Twin Hopper where I added the Pike Stuff Panels for a panel side hopper of which the Wabash had several thousand. Hauled coal out of southern Illinois and Indiana for use at various power plants. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Black Paint and lettered with Mask Island decals. The last car I did had the small Wabash this one has the later large Wabash. Next is an Intermountain 40' 12 Panel 10'inside height boxcar kit, substituting Yarmouth Models metal sill steps for the kit supplied plastic ones, then painted with Scalecoat II ATSF Mineral Red paint and lettered with Microscale decals. These cars were used during the grain rush in the 50's and then in lumber service the rest of the year. Stewart ALCO C628 and C630 with a long ore drag headed to Pittsburg from Cleveland. Stongsville Railroad Club layout. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

That's awesome that you can print a car or parts, etc.
How much are these printers?

Here is a printed PRR F41, and the fresh F41B I just printed sitting on top of it. It's lettered with Microscale N and HO boxcar decals, but I'm trying to find someone interested in making decals for these. The F41B has a different scheme, with no large "Pennsylvania," but instead "PRR" and a shadow keystone. It will also ride on Crown trucks. Wow, that looks fantastic! I'd love to have one of those to model a Conrail flat in the mid-1990s - it looks like quite a few of them lasted into that time period. Is the deck cut out from thin wood sheet and scribed? Looks great! Dave

Had the diorama out this morning before work, some freight car fun. Finished the UP PC&F car, the '70s sure had some attractive paint schemes and UP's cars with their silver trucks were always pretty classy looking. A 20 year model that I kitbashed and did most of the letterering one at a time.... Red Caboose RDMX771 Mostly scratch built 90 ton Gunderson Bros. covered gon. D&RGW 61525, Athearn PC&F.

For several years I have said the future of the hobby is in 3D printing and Adam proved me correct with his terrific model. I was feeling pretty good about my efforts modelling flat cars this past week until I saw Adam's model. Nevertheless. I built a Tichy kit which I certainly enjoyed. I tried to model D&RGW flat car # 21068 based on this photo: Here is my model: I had never built a Tichy kit before and was pleased with how easily the kit came together. I added several details from styrene.

Good stuff everyone. While i'm not totally finished with the weathering, I do have another coil hauler to show. I wanted to do it in the sunshine but looking at the next week, it looks like the past week of nothing but clouds. Lovely for the mood! So you'll have to see it under the indoor lighting.. Islington Station decals for most of the lettering, although I left a few stock Intermountain stuff as well. Moloco draft gear, Tangent 100ton trucks with three different bearing caps on this side, Tangent air hoses, custom painted white hood, "70" wheel center decals by my own design, and Plano pin lifters to polish it off. This is a decent effort for the lazy guy in me, as this would have been a much better car to not just strip the lettering but to repaint in entirety. CSX blue has been too light on most efforts over the years and this falls under that category.

The PRR F41's look really good and it would be great to get an accurate model of one. Maybe you'll have some at the RPM-East meet?

Thanks all! I print on Elegoo Saturns, which are currently $329 each. They aren't the top of the line anymore, and I imagine there will be some Black Friday deals coming up if anyone is looking to get into it.
The deck is actually laser cut- I had my guy cut a couple decks for these and two future flats when I ordered more well car decks.
Tom, that's the plan! F41, F41B, F41D, and (if I can get more info), F41A kits all at RPM-East. Hopefully I'll have the full story on decals soon, these are primarily Microscale boxcar sets. Surprisingly little cut and paste though!
I'm beyond tickled with how these cars came out. It was very handy to have a real F41 here in Fayetteville, PA to photograph and measure as needed. I'm thinking I'll print Crown trucks for the B/D subclasses, as the Bowser ones have a different spring package, and since the demise of Reboxx wheelsets there isn't really a way to put code 88 wheelsets in theirs.

Nice work as usual everybody! I enjoy seeing the CP units. Used to see them park across the river from me in South Philadelphia PA until CP pulled the plug several years ago. Was a nice operation (originally D&H) and added variety to the years of the CR/CSX/NS show. Keep up the nice work.

Looking good. I forget the part # for the DW K5LA horn. That particular configuration wasn’t always an easy find. I got one several years back I will use down the road but it’s stored away with all my other horns minus the packaging they all came in.

I have a bunch of loose horns in my small parts tote that i have and it was in there. Prefer the brass details west horns over most but those are nearly impossible to find now.

It's a Red Caboose model that Intermountain currently sells. Unfortunately I have worked on this thing on and off over the last two or so years, so being sporadic I didn't do a good job of step documentation. The draft gear I replaced was removed with a pair of rail cutters rather crudely, which I then sanded down near the bolster screw hole. I set back the Moloco draft gear by eye, trying to line it up via photos and then opted to glue it in place. Not much tooth in the carbody to tap into at that location, I actually pushed through the interior floor on my first attempt, but I don't intend to run this without covers so no big deal.

I managed to get a few a year or two back when Walthers briefly had some in stock but now they are back to 'Out of Stock no info from Vendor'. Too bad, I could use a whole bunch more. I am hoping the new Tangent antennas will be just as nice, and easily available.

Thanks for posting. They look to be the same size as the DA part vs the oversized DW ones. Good to know.

The Tangent one is actually fairly smaller. The PSC version is pretty good though also.
