How did you find a bus plate that looks new?

^ Great question. These are mint leftover front plates that were issued but never installed after a 1987 change in law which removed the front plate requirement. I found several of them at a local sale in 2020 and instantly recognized the letter series. Some of the plates were even marked with the bus # they would have been attached to.

Current Blue Rapids depot progress. Ends are awaiting a second coat of Tamiya red brown paint. The depot build parts include: asbestos siding from Rail Scale Models; doors/windows using modified Tichy Train Group parts; various Evergreen styrene pieces and sheets cut using a Cricut Maker. It'll have a full interior and I plan to illuminate it with LEDs.

Good morning from cloudy, cold, snowy and windy Northeast Ohio! Here are my completed models for the week! Alpha Models import of a PRR Class N8 Cabin Car. Not much modeling involved, painted the car with Scalecoat PRR Freight Car Red and Black paints then lettered with Champ Decals. Next, IMWX 1937 AAR Boxcar kit, with Yarmouth Models Sill Steps in place of the kit supplied plastic ones. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Speedwitch Media decals. Car was in general service on the NH, many were eventually sold to other railroads as the financial condition of the NH deteriorated. I am also working on changing the details on a Brian Everett special run of Accurail DT&I boxcars in the 18100 class. This was the closest car to the prototype, but have to change the door from 8' to 9' and remove the grabs and replace with ladders which I have done. I have to mask the car to preserve the lettering as it is correct then touch up the changed parts with BN Cascade Green paint. New Haven U25b and C-425 painted in the bankruptcy scheme going by the main yard of the Strongsville Model Railroad club with a general freight! Rick Jesionowski

A little photo fun. 1966 on the Rio Grande, there are still plenty of EMD's F units on the roster running out mileage before being traded back on newer higher horsepower models. The Grande didn't seem to mix the older units with the newer second generation '30's, '35's and '40's, here we have a quintet in as delivered four strip and newer single stripe repaints working upgrade towards Soldier Summit in the Fall of '66. It must be a Saturday and the helpers include a mine run GP7 5101 and the Helper, UT switcher SD7 5302. 5711 on the point. 5594 buried mid consist, the roar of EMD 567's echos of the walls of Price River Canyon. A filthy 5641 trails, one can see why the Rio Grande choose to repaint these units with a black roof Locked in Run 8 and the couplers chocked straight, the GP7/SD7 helpers keep the slack bunched behind caboose 01422.

They look even more realistic in B&W. Nice weathering.
When did DRGW change to the single black stripe on the Fs?

When did DRGW change to the single black stripe on the Fs?
Repainting of the F units was spotty, many were traded back to EMD in their original paint, IIRC they began repainting equipment into the single stripe sometime in the late '50's. All the work was done at Burnham (Denver) and wasn't a high priority, with the exception of wrecks (and the SD45's) most second generation hood units were never repainted throughout their time on the Rio Grande.

When did DRGW change to the single black stripe on the Fs? From memory, the passenger units got single stripe treatment starting in 1963, F3s and a passenger set of FTs. The majority of Fs got single stripe in the 1965/66 period. Very few were still 4 stripe as late as 1967. This per Joseph Strapac's Rio Grande Diesels: Vol 1

Black and white photos always seem more dramatic--great modelling! I love the bus and that Pennsy caboose is an attention grabber. I finished another Tichy flat car this week. The deck was colored/weathered with pan pastels after painting it with a light gray basecoat. The deck appears considerably darker in the layout lighting than it does in direct sunlight.

Got a few things done of the past few weeks. Up first is a trio of Tangent undeecorated 4750s. All painted with various Model Master Grays. NS is lettered with Microscale decals. The NW pair one HC71 and HC78 use Daniel Kolhbergs wonderful decals. Last is the completed NS GP59. Shapeways cab, nose and dynamic brake by our own Fr8kar. Various Cannon parts, doors and scratch built hood sides. Great work everyone!

Excellent, as usual, models and photography. T-bird the B&W stuff looks good on a good sized monitor, probably 2-3 times actual size
First glance thought I was looking at some of Steinheimer’s Tri-X blk and white from Trains in “the day” he was a master, apologies if misspelled.
I used to love Tri-X pushed in Accufine, grain structure was a thing of beauty to the right eye. 3200 asa.

That took over one year to complete with research and trying find the actual door widths and comparing with Cannon doors. The GP59 has a few doors that are not available from Cannon.

Yesterday, I finished the last of the Santa Fe map box cars. The car was placed in revenue service along with the remainder of the fleet. I have built about a dozen 40' and 50' box cars in this fleet. They are Accurail kits, decaled with Microscale decals. I added metal wheels and Kadee couplers.

I used Cannon doors. The first two engine room doors are 21" wide and Cannon only does the 22" door. Under the radiator the doors are 57" tall and Cannon makes the 65" tall version which had to be shortened.
I got accurate measurements and now have a set of etched doors to do my next GP59. I might even try to scratch build the chassis instead of sacrificing a P2K GP60 again.
My friend Tony Sissons has built his GP59 with the etches and a scratch built chassis. If you see the clinic listed at an RPM I would highly recommend catching that clinic.
