I've GOT it!! Rapido should make the doors THINNER, by .018". That's just a matter of thickening the back of the door mold. By doing this, they can then supply replacement doors to all of up who bought the first run! Then, we don't have to futz with the body at all. AND. If we damage the old door getting it out, it doesn't matter--just pop the new little guy into the well. Rapido most likely already has this solution on the road to implementation--it's so obvious. You guys who follow their Facebook page please let us know when that happens. I think they're still avoiding us over here. Ed
It is easier for you to mill out the opening than for Rapido to pass thru the eye of that needle.

There's been very little criticism of the model on the ATSF or Citrus Modeling io groups. The single comment on the door that I saw said the model could represent a car with the door cracked open for ventilation. Never before modeled, so it's a feature not a bug.
Are you buying it?
The Citrus Modeling group is owned by the guy who researched the project. I will note that he hasn't said a word anywhere (that I know of) that responds to any of the criticisms. Like I think I said, the flaws aren't big enough to get me to dump the cars. Even up close, they look pretty good. To me. It's just that it's ridiculous to have the words "Rapido" and "flawed" be synonyms. Ed

You can't see if you don't know. I agree, the flaws aren't big enough to dump the cars, just more modeling work to do, THANKS Rapido, as if we didn't have enough already. That is why I love MOLOCO and TANGENT

.018" is indeed an odd size for styrene sheet. I thought that I would have to cobble something together to get it, but when I measured an Evergreen sheet that is labeled .015 it actually was .018. Mark

If I was a betting man I'd wager good money that will never happen. "It's good enough and our customers don't care."

Let there be Orange. I mixed up Tamiya Yellow, Orange and Red to get to the "kind of close" shade. I think it came out alright for a first timer, and will double for IC orange in a pinch.

How did you remove the running board? They seem to be crimped in place pretty tightly.

I like that orange! Would you mind sharing proportions for your mix?

I removed the running board by lifting one end of the car's running board supports at an angle away from the car end which then separated it from the support, and the remainder was just a matter of running the back edge of a hobby knife the length of the running board until I got the opposite end which was removed in the same manner.
For the Tamiya mixing ratio, I used a 15:1:1 ratio of Tamiya X-8 (Lemon Yellow), Tamiya X-6 (Orange), Tamiya X-7 (Red). The ratio was mixed in a 2:1 paint to thinner (Tamiya Lacquer Thinner was used in place of Tamiya Acrylic Thinner) ratio and applied at approximately 1" to 2" from the surface. The model was primed using Tamiya Fine Surface Primer prior to airbrushing the paint mixture at 13 PSI.

Just removed my trucks for weathering. They are wired to something inside. These do not have sound (actually do not know but I didn't pay for it). I just pulled until the pair of wires broke off from wherever they are soldered.

I just pulled until the pair of wires broke off from wherever they are soldered. They were pre wired for sound decoders but not installed at the factory. The wires are actually taped to the interior weight and are otherwise unattached. The trucks are capable of being powered, but truly do not look the part. The brass contact strips are located behind the side frame face and may be usable on other side frames, but if you want power, you will likely be best suited to use SB4DCC’s wiper kits on prototypical trucks. The prototype’s used a 5’8” wheelbase which explains their longer appearance. I spoke with Bill at Rapido last week and asked about the sound boards which he advised they were shipping soon. No further details were known as to when they would be here. A Tsunami sound car decoder could also be installed to gain sounds, but finding appropriate power capable trucks is the issue. C’mon Plate C where are those ASF trucks?!?

Sourcing my own wheelsets from China, bad timing due to the Chinese New Year. I'm tired of using code 88 wheels on 110 axles, as that's leaving half the potential benefit on the table. These are the first of a new and improved generation of trucks.

So, when Santa Fe changed cars from SFRD to SFRP in 1963, did they repaint cars or just lettering?

From John B. Moore, Jr.'s "Santa Fe...Volume Six, Mechanical Refrigerator Cars...":
"The MTC cars marked SFRD were changed to SFRP." "The re-marking consisted of painting out the D with a paint patch and...then painting the P on the patch." "The re-marking task was not completed until 1965."

I've been wondering whether the refrigeration units on these cars ran continuously when under load or cycled on and off like a household appliance. I used to be around them quite often but never noticed.

I would imagine they cycled on and off, or they would be drinking fuel.
Modern reefers cycle on for about 15 minutes once an hour-90 minutes or so.

Cycled off & on via thermostat, batteries, & electric starter. You could hear different ones stopping & starting walking thru a yard with reefer blocks at night.

That's better. These are the only two sample wheelsets I have, hopefully won't be long now for the whole batch to get here.
