Custom paint, Highball decals, details, new trucks, storm doors and weathering were applied to this brass model of CP 434109 several years ago. These were the first yellow cabooses on CP Rail, rebuilt from blt-1954 streamlined cupola (437405-454) vans in 1968-69. These retained the original running board supports, radial roof and riveted body panels. CP 434109 was one of very few rebuilds that never received the underbody generator.

Here are some more 3D printed parts for my GE Dash 7 projects. I started off with some factory-painted Atlas shells from their website awhile back and decided to make some dummies to fill out power consists since I've already got plenty of power. In order to complete the shells I've been designing lots of parts where I think there's room for improvement. It's not really cheap to do this but it's fun. Anyway, the first thing that had to be addressed on the Atlas B23-7 is the high short hood. I printed a replacement nose for this before but I wasn't happy with the length so this is the replacement. Here it is posed next to the factory nose on the shell in Southern paint. My apologies for all the schmutz all over that shell. It must have been raining debris when I was furiously sawing off the nose of the other shell! You can see the difference in profile from one to the next. I don't know how Atlas came up with that design of a nearly flat nose and protruding numberboard but here we are. I also decided to convert the shell painted for Norfolk Southern from a Phase 1 to a Phase 3 since I already had an extra Phase 2 sill handy and I was going to be printing the frame anyway. This consists of harvesting an extra door from the subbase of another Phase 2 sill and cutting it into the new sill, then taking six inches of length out of each end of the sill inboard of the stepwells (this is going to be so much easier to print when I finish that drawing!). I've been modifying Hi-Tech exhausts when I build these models but I finally gave in and printed the part so I can go back and fix up older projects and have some handy for future models. So here's where we are with the Phase 1 to Phase 3 kitbash: It's out of focus but these both got new fuel tanks with centered fillers and new reservoirs flanking the tank. But the star of the show is the FB-2 sideframes. This is one of those rabbit holes where I was immersed in this drawing for several days and came out with numerous variations on both Adirondack and Rockwell versions of this design. Here are two of those variations (first Adirondack then Rockwell) and the Adirondack sideframe in paint where the lettering detail disappears for now. Yes, the two large casting holes in the Adirondack sideframe filled in with liquid resin somewhat so they will have to be drilled out to the proper diameter: Marshall at MP Scale Models is responsible for the printing of these and my other models. He deserves a lot of credit for making these ideas happen.

Ryan, nice trucks, I can't imagine the time to draw these things.
Question - is what appears to be a speed recorder part, is that a separate piece? Still looking for a replacement for the old Utah Pacific ones.

Good morning from Northeast Ohio! Here is what I got done this week: E&C 52'6" Greenville Gon kit, replaced the plastic grabs and sill steps with Tichy Grabs and A-Line Sill steps. Painted the car with Scalecoat II Reading Green and lettered with Oddballs decals. Car was in general service on the MKT. Used the Greenville car as it had the right number of stakes for the lettering layout. Next an Intermountain R70-20 Reefer kit, added Yarmouth Models Sill Steps in place of the fragile plastic ones from the kit. Painted the car with Scalecoat II White and Black paints and lettered with Microscale decals. Car represents the SP repaints after the breakup of PFE between the SP and UP. Cars were all painted the same on the SP except various colors were used for the logos, this one happens to be red. A couple of Athearn SD45's with a SP General Freight running on the Strongsville Club layout which will be open this weekend during the Strongsville Historical Society's Christmas festival. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

Nice Rio Grande train with the F units - probably typical of around 1965 or 66.

Just for fun, the Kingsbury job retreats from Cherry Street as a nearly-new Ford CL9000 heads towards Lissner Metals. Waycar is built on Atlas frame with he6agon's body printed by Shapeways. Bought the parts before Shapeways prices soared and Walthers announced the same car RTR. I guess I broke the ice for everyone else? Black on white is not ideal for pictures.

Couple things finished this week: First up is this Rapido BC Rail C40-8M, I added details that were missing from the factory and updated it to 2020-21 ish appearance by removing one of the intake grills ahead of the radiator, adding x3 small Locotrol IV antennas on the cab roof, relocating the radio antenna to the rear of the cab, added a small cone antenna to the engineer's side near the front of the cab, added a K5L horn, replaced all the nose and rear grabs with BLMA grabs, added a dual beam rear headlight, the 2nd pair of ditchlights below the anticlimber, MU hoses, a cable going to the speed recorder, filled and colored the class lights, replaced the BC flag herald near the rear with a Microscale decal, added the yellow reflective sill and step stripes, and Kadee couplers - a 118 on the front, and a 119 on the rear. Oddly this matches recent photos I have seen, with an F coupler on the front only. Not sure when or why this happened as these BC Rail units were built with bottom shelf Es. Finally, I used decals from PDC to add the nose door 'window' and renumber the unit to 4609, which happens to be the only one currently in service on CN. The majority of the others are currently stored and a few have been scrapped. The other thing I finished this week was much simpler, updating this Intermountain NSC 4550 hopper to 2010s+ appearance. Modifications were limited to patching over the CAPY data line and the 'WX' in the reporting mark on both sides and the ends, and adding reflective 'idiot stripes'. Smokebox Graphics decals were used for the whole job. An interesting side affect to the extreme thin-ness of the decals is that the 'WX' is still partially visible through the patch, something that can be observed on the real cars once in a while. I did not specifically intend to replicate that particular feature but was pleasantly surprised it worked out that way. I still have a couple more of these to do to fill out my CP grain train.

I got another 2 beer reefers done... How big is the fleet? Somewhere around 70-75 cars. We pulled about 60 of them around the modular layout a couple weeks ago. I think there is a video up on facebook. If I can find it I will post a link sometime

I fired up my 3D printer this weekend, still learning it a bit: The driveshafts end up warping a bit. Not sure why. Wish I could find a pair of U33C/C30-7 driveshafts. This chassis will eventually go under my MILW U30C with some modified sideframes from Fr8kar. Something I’ve been playing with with the last few U30Cs turns out drilling a hole and using a super saw to remove the middle section works great. Although I am thinking of trying to use just 1 LED for the rear lights with a section of the default atlas head/taillight assembly.

Got the last train in the paint booth for the year. NJ Transit 4101 which is painted in NJDOT heritage colors which was what the diesel fleet looked pre NJ Transit. Used a tamiya silver and navy blue, exact names escape me. But i de-contented them to be thinned more and used in an airbrush. Was afraid they might be off since they were applied separately to the long hood, cab and nose at different times and days Last of the decals for the csx units. It took roughly 3 hours just for 1712 alone for the data/warning decals 20221209_181657 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20221207_150338 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr
