Canadian Pacific was an early Alco customer with their S2 model being the first production unit in CP's dieselization projects of the 1940s and '50s. Units 7010-64 from 1943-47 were the only CPR production diesel units delivered in black paint and were repainted by the mid-1950s. The S2 and later S4 units had several different paint schemes and were used in CP towns and cities nationwide until their final retirements in the mid-1980s. Preserved CP 7019 and 7020 were beautifully restored to this original paint scheme in Toronto (2019) and Calgary (1985). All versions of the decades-old Atlas S2/4 model are valid starting points to replicate 1940s era CPR units in the 7020-64 range. Shop around on ebay and try for the red box or newer versions for their finer details. Despite the simple-looking finished appearance, this was actually a very finicky and extensive project. Lots of tiny cab details and railings to be addressed plus the custom paint and lettering.

Christmas morning, starting 10:17 EST
Thanks to the two previous posters for the photos of their great modeling!
I certainly remember Billy Carter. I have fond memories of the Walthers just-for-fun HO model of a car inspired by President Jimmy Carter featuring an enormous peanut. Danpik, is your handsome model of the Billy Beer reefer based on a real full-sized car or instead a product of your creative imagination?

Good morning from windy, cold and snowy Northeast Ohio! Got a couple of projects completed this week! Ryan, I managed to find a rare DT&I car to add to collection, still have some others to do!!! First up an Athearn 50' Outside Post PC&F RBL, painted with Scalecoat II Orange, Black and Silver paint then lettered with a mixture of Mask Island and Herald King Decals. This car came up from a 2015 post in the MFCL where somebody asked about Orange RBL's on the DT&I, and I replied there were never any Orange RBL's on the DT&I just yellow ones. A few more posts and Jim Hediger chimes in about the Orange RBL's purchased for servicing the Hubelein Liquor Warehouse in Allen Park, MI. Seems due to the loading all being done inside the warehouse that was surrounded by chainlink fence topped with razor wire and the RR police always watching the valuable cars very few photos were ever taken of these cars. Managed to find one so I could piece together the decals for this car. Next a couple of PRR G39 Ore Jimmies to add to the fleet, these were replacements for the worn out GLca and H21 Hoppers that were previously used to move iron ore from the port areas to the steel mills. Cars were painted with Scalecoat II Black paint and lettered with K4 decals. A pair of Athearn SD45's with a reefer train bringing California produce to the the rest of the nation, on the Stongsville Club layout. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

All of the beer cars I have done so far are the product of my warped imagination. As far as I know the only two reefers I know of that had corporate names on them were Genesee and Miller. I have the Genesee but, my Miller is not prototypical. I also did a Anheuser Busch corn syrup tank car lettered from a prototype photo.

First, Merry Christmas to all! Spectacular modelling. Here is an Accurail car I decaled and partially weathered. This is all I got done this past week. danoik-great beer train models. The Billy Beer was a blast from the past! I presume that your beer train is a high priority train on your layout. I hate to rub it in, but it is 78 degrees in our back patio this afternoon. We celebrated Christmas lunch outside.

Interesting backstory to danpik’s neat Just-for-Fun model… The Jacksonville Brewing Company and the Jackson Brewing Company of New Orleans engaged in a long and acrimonious dispute with regard to the “Jax” trademark for their respective beers. Eventually, in the 1950s, the Jackson Brewing Company (New Orleans) obtained the sole rights to the “Jax” name. Jax was brewed locally in New Orleans until the 1980s when the company was acquired by Pabst. Their former brewery remains a city landmark located right off of iconic Jackson Square. What got me interested was the “Jax” decal on the right of the door. I’m pretty sure that logo was only used by the NOLA Jackson Brewing Company. The prancing horse was a common element in their advertising as was the slogan “Best Beer in Town.” On the other hand, the Jacksonville “Jax” frequently featured a stylized bird in their advertising and cans. Jacksonville Jax Can So as Mr. Paul Harvey used to say "Now you know . . . the rest of the story."

Believe it or not, this is my first SPF post, now that I have an image hosting account so I can share photos. I took a break from carving waffles off Berwick boxcars to revisit a project I started over five years ago. I've always loved newsprint boxcars, and the GTW 598000-598199 series cars built by National Steel Car (NSC) are one of my favorites, as I would see them rolling through Maryland from time to time. Atlas produced a great model of several versions of the NSC boxcars, but the GTW model was a compromise, because they had to use a 9' door car to get the proper side sill profile and ends. I wanted to do built a correct model of one of them by modifying a 10' door car, so thus started another kitbash! I had the chance over the last couple days, including today as the kids were enjoying their presents, to get back to this project. Here's the prototype, GTW 598144, that I photographed in Brunswick, Maryland on July 16, 2011: The starting point, an Atlas NSC 5277 boxcar, has a deeper side sill and an extra corrugation at the top of the ends that has to be removed: I made a simple jig for scribing the line for the shorter/shallower sill over the trucks with some .020" x .250" styrene strip and .125" square rod. Here's how the modification worked: I kind of eyeballed the cut along the lower part of the sill under the door, using a strip of shim brass to scribe the line. The car after side sill modification: I'll have to modify the bolsters, since their ends are now partially exposed by the shorter side sill. The lower door track will have to be moved to a lower position on the side sill too. Here's the GTW car compared to an unmodified model, showing how the top end corrugation was removed (Power Grip chisel and foam sanding sticks to the rescue again!). I hope you all have a wonderful holiday! Dave

Decided to work on my pier this weekend. Decided to built it in 3 chunks. Unfortunately I ran out of stain to finish the decking as well. 715 pieces in this first 3rd so far. Hoping I ordered enough tie plates as well..

Photos of two freshly stripped Athearn Modernized boxcars. The gouging from the exacto blade looked far worse with paint on the cars, these don't look too bad. Both cars need the remains of the grab-iron-like plastic blobs sanded smooth with the car sides. One car needs the ladder remains on both sides sanded down, and the other car still needs the ladders shaved off in the first place.

Work continues on the Mopac's Blue Rapid, KS, depot. I've assembled the depot exterior walls and completed the asbestos siding on the ends. All windows are glued in. The bay window piece isn't glued in yet as I want to finish the interior to include the floor and walls. I received another order of styrene from Evergreen so I can work on the exterior corner trim pieces. I still need to install the interior trim around the windows/door and the wainscoting. I'm waiting for my shack to warm up from the -7 temperatures we've had to allow me to airbrush. May I ask what paint color you used for the interior? A good looking project so far!

Handrails painted, silver reflective striping added. Fuel tank added and still needs its red and orange fuel caps painted. Correct truck sideframes have been built and need paint. Working on electronics now. Red markers glued in and athearn dual cube speaker being added to factory speaker housing/weight that held old style speakers. 20221222_160936 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr 20221227_171817 by Tripps Pics79, on Flickr

I used Tamiya XF-21 sky for the interior.
I'll use Tamiya XF-71 cockpit green for the interior trim pieces.

I used Tamiya XF-21 sky for the interior. I'll use Tamiya XF-71 cockpit green for the interior trim pieces. As I go to several LHS in southern California, it is clear that model railroad paints are becoming extinct. I too have been looking at Tamiya paints. On Monday I purchased a few bottles of Taiya lacquer paints in hope of mixing something close to colors I can use to paint rolling stock. My supply of model railroad paint is dwindling.

Tamiya paints are excellent quality paints, I've never mixed any but see no reason it wouldn't work well. I use Sunnyside alcohol to thin it, white and yellow can from ACE among others, in Michigan. No idea in CAL.
