I know this is a loaded question, but for those who have them, what are the favorite air brush compressors out there? If the compressor doesn't have a built in tank, is it practical to add an external? I've also toyed with the idea of buying the Milwaukee M18 air compressor, good, bad, indifferent idea?

I bought a relatively cheap Master Airbrush compressor with tank about 6 years ago. Its has worked fine for me and is fairly quiet. I replaced the gauge with another model which has scale increments more aligned with my spray pressures (0-30PSI).

For my first two compressors, I added a tank, as neither came with one. No particular problem. There seems to be three kinds of air brush compressors: The hobby ones. The "big guys" (usually use the word "gallons" and/or "horsepower") Dental office. The last one is surely the quietest, and most expensive. The ones I've seen look like desktop computers. That's likely what I'd buy if I was willing to spend the bucks. The big guys are, well, big. And noisy. And are probably the most cost effective. You kinda want them away from you, like out in the garage. You then run a hose or something to your spray booth. The hobby ones are small and sorta quiet-ish. And relativiely inexpensive. This is my most recent (a "hobby one"): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WBT7PTW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1I've got no complaints. It DOES come with "everything", like tank, regulator....... I think there was a minor problem with connection MY air brush hose, but that's easy to solve. Ed

Thank you for the replies. As I will be using this in an apartment, it will have to be as quite as possible, hence the reason for looking at the Milwaukee.

If you mean the M18 Inflator, no. That one does not survive continuous running and would pulse the air flow. If you mean the M18 Fuel, that would be really great. But prices are creeping toward $400.00. Paasche makes a starter TANK compressor that is about $140. there are various Master Airbrush compressors as posted above. If I was to start again I'd give them a close looks. You're just asking for issues if you don't get a tank compressor. Piston compressors are olde tyme favorites, but time has moved on. I use a bottom of the line, Craftsman that I've dragged around since 1989. Not particularly quiet, but when I lived in an apartment I just made sure it didn't automatically pump up the tank outside of business hours.

I bought a Makita Quiet Series compressor and have been very happy with it. Makita MAC100QPrice is $180 to $190 at Home Depot and other tool stores. Price is $250 for kits that include a brad nailer and air hose.

Hi,
Just search on Amazon for "as-186 compressor". That gives several compressors with a small 3 liter air tank. I have one of these for over 10 year and it works flawless. The only thing needing regular replacement is the rubber O-washer which seals the drainage bolt in the bottom of the tank. But that costs just penny's.
Regarding the airbrush, that is where you wil find the differances. I personally have bad experience with the cheap airbrushes they use to combine with these compressors. I bought an Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Two in One Airbrush. Not cheap but makes all the difference during spraying. Nothing makes you more sour then splatters and other mishaps due to a faulty airbrush.

I was using compressed nitrogen, but the apartment we moved into, won't let me have the bottles in the apartment.

Yup, is an upgraded version of the one I have. I have a fanless model. To get it hot you need to spray heavy and continuously. But normally I spray short periods and that way you can use it all day without any problem.
As Barbatos mentioned, even when not used a long time it just works.

I had been using a large 20 gallon harbor freight compressor but the motor or something keeps causing the breaker to trip. Got sick of figuring what was wrong. Fiancee got me a husky 5 gallon air compressor and use that now.
