Keeping with my recent theme of building boxcars for the Worm: First off is an ambitious but not difficult project, a P&LE X44D. Somebody must have been getting paid by the rivet! I also drew up some Despatch parts to convert an Intermountain 60' box to a DSI prototype.

Nothing too involved, but I recently removed the "cushion unit" details from my handful of Atlas ACF "Precision Design" boxcars. These were originally delivered to the "real" Norfolk Southern and many were later repainted into SOU paint. I also have one still in NS paint that will get patched for the "new" NS. I just used some of the newer Kadee coupler boxes I had on hand. Next up, I need to find some replacement doors. These were probably a little old for my era, but there isn't much out there for SOU boxcars that aren't waffle sided. I wouldn't mind seeing someone come out with a P-S boxcar "system" that could capture the SOU variations. I'd like a couple dozen!

^ Just wondering why someone would remove cushion coupler pockets from modern boxcars. Your post doesn't say.

Jim King has the old NS PS 5277 Boxcars out, with the Southern version soon to follow. Jim has indicated that he is inclined to do more Southern Boxcar, particularly non waffles. Russ

^ Just wondering why someone would remove cushion coupler pockets from modern boxcars. Your post doesn't say. I guess that is an important detail. The prototypes were never equipped with cushion underfames. Atlas only offers the car with cushion underframes, though. Unfortunately the IM car is a bit too old for me. I'd like to see some later P-S prototypes like what Smokey Mountain Model Works is doing in kit form. I strongly considered getting a few but ideally I want a couple dozen and don't want to take on a big project like that with $65 kits.

Another caboose, this time a Precision Scale version of a PRR N5b, the N5b's were modified N5 that had a number of changes that were manufactured in 1941 thus accounting for the b designation. Painted with Scalecoat PRR Freight Car Red and Black paints and lettered with a combination of K4 and Champ Decals. Next up a Front Range 50' ACF Boxcar kit, added centered 8' double doors, Moloco ACF cushioned coupler pocket, Branchline 50' Diagonal Panel Roof and A-Line sill steps. Painted with Scalecoat II ATSF Red and Reefer Yellow paints and lettered with Mask Island Decals. Car was one of 100 owned by the T&P for general service, similar to 400 cars owned by parent MP and MI railroads. Rapido Pennsy FA and FB-2's with a general freight running on the Strongsville Club Layout. Rick Jesionowski

Recently the CB&QHS Burlington Bulletin had an article on the Congress Park interchange. A photo in this article featured a U23C/GP7/GP7/GN 405 (SD45) consist in December of 1969. I'm looking for opportunities to add run through power to my CB&Q mainline and coincidentally, Walthers just released a run of Proto SD45s that match the GN 400-407 series built in 1966. Naturally, this led to me ordering one for my fleet. It arrived this week. I was very impressed. Details for this run are quite good. All I added were some decals to represent the non-stick strips GN added on top of the nose. To be fair to Walthers, these units were not delivered with these, they were added later by the GN. Other than that, adding a decoder, speed matching, and weathering, it was ready to go. It is now my second favorite "Rocky" in the basement. Tim VanMersbergen

Other than the Atlas ACF PD cars, Athearn SIECO boxcars and the Exactrail Waffles there is not much else in RTR for prototypical Southern boxcars. Jim King's Southern 5277 kit is the best you will for a true Southern 5277. The Athearn and Intermountain cars are foobies. All of Southern's 5277's are 6 post cars, where the Athearn and Intermountain are 5 post. There is the PWRS 5077 in Railbox patch available. Other than the available riveted and welded smooth side cars from PS-1's(Kadee or Intermountain) not much else exists for 50' Southern boxcars. There are 60 and Tangents' new 86' Greenville.

Finished modernizing the Rapido B-100-40, ok, its actually numbered for a B-100-43, but I didn't modify the side sills like I originally intended to do- Chevy C60 grain trucks and dump truck "side project" from ancient C in C pewter kits is sort of finished now. At least now if I ever get a layout built it's not going to have those same old Athearn Fords on it like everyone else! Brad

Those Chevy C60 trucks look great! Need to find me one of those kits. Saw a $70 expired listing on eBay...

I took a little break from the beer reefers this week and finished up a project that was on the shelf for a while.

danpik, re your model of Kodak Park #8: it looks like a Bicentennial unit. Was there a real loco like this, or is this one of your own "what if" creations? If there was a full-sized loco, did it serve the Eastman Kodak factory in Rochester, NY, and about when did it wear this livery? Nicely done, in any case! Thanks for posting the photo.

Lmk if it has a roofwalk, not sure how they are attached on an IM car I'll have to check. I used to think all roof walks had to be removed if I was modeling the late 70's, but I've learned some were still attached from viewing photo's taken in the late 70's. Even a few in the early 80's.

Here is a link to a photo www.flickr.com/photos/rgvrrm/46016168492 My stripe colors are not as vivid as the prototype. Not sure of the time frame but was supposed to have been on the grounds with the others when a different operator took over running the RR.

danpik, thanks for your reply with the link to the photo of the switcher. If my memory is correct -- and on this as well as other things it may not be -- the colors of the livery in the photo of the real loco may match those of the boxes in which at least one type of Kodak film was packaged. The caption of the photo says the loco was built new for Kodak in 1968 but painted as in t he photo in 1989, well after the Bicentennial of American indepence.
